A Revolution is the Solution

Gravatar Can you imagine the havoc that could ensue with an automated IM bot? OMG, IM servers would be crushed and crippled.

Its almost too scarey to think about.

Gravatar no need to imagine it its going to happen if you like it or not, the abusers of the net enjoy smashing stuff for the sake of doing so
sort of Yobs in Cyber space, good name for a movie

Gravatar >>Is the only solution to simply cripple the ability to send people links in IM?

No, another solution is to disable the URL-text-to-hyperlink conversion in the IM app, thus preventing people from just clicking on any and every hyperlink in IM.

But Murphy's Law strikes again; there is no way to do this in AIM, or so it appears.

PG, excuse me if this subject has been beaten to death already, but: Isn't that what e-mail is for (and I don't mean file attachments, I mean links to web content)?

Yes and no - to me, it depends on the end-user's actual usage of the app in question. sending links by email? i never, ever do it. only time i do, is when im using IM. i guess you'll find all shades between one extreme and the other, but im sitting there with an IM up, i have a pal in front of me, how many times do they (or myself, for that matter) use that IM functionality to fire a link to something they found funny / interesting / whatever and await a human (and immediate) response?

Thanks for the question

Gravatar Does anyone use email anymore? I realize the answer is yes for those who dont sit in front of a box all day. But for others who do, like myself, email has fallen to about the same place snail mail has fallen after the invention of the telephone. You can see I have absolutely no facts to back this up, but it makes sense to me. Email responses can take over a day, but IM is "instant" like its namesake.

I've actually tried doing IM thru email once with a bunch of friends. It was a frenzy of composemail/subject/content/attach/send/confirm/ loop between twenty kids or so.

Gravatar You're right, it won't happen again because I'm about to ban you. Not only am I sick of people suddenly turning up and spamming this site, I'm growing even more tired of people now quite openly doing so and posting utterly irrelevant content to boot.

This is a security site, not Google. How else can you tell me? By getting some decent SEO going and hoping I find you on a search engine.

Next person to spam will just have their message deleted. You have been warned.

Gravatar that's telling them PG ....... hope he doesn't mean us *looks @ jibber jabber thread*

Gravatar I love it when someone is so straightforward.
