Might actually be a good thing.
Get someone the public identifies with and then get them talking about an issue that Mr Joe Public normally doesnt know about or care about.
It just depends how they're doing it I guess.
If they are going round saying "Spyware will kill your computer, ruin your life and cause the next world war, but if you buy our software it will stop it!" then it is a bad idea and will flop.
However if they are going round and spreading the spyware facts and what people can do to protect themselves and which companies to avoid, there spreading the good word, then it can only be a good thing.

Yes she is attractive and presentation goes a long way in getting a msg out.
Other factors that help might include...
information in an easily understood format. (the less technical the better we as end consumers are not less than optimally brained we just are unable to easily follow tech-speech)
the ability to reach your intended end users. (gotta go where the customers are)
an easily recgognized spokes person. (once you reach the target audience you need to relate to them in a way they are drawn to and will seek out later.)
So to recap, you need a non-threatening, easily understood, spokes person.
You need some cute, but compelling taglines.

i would say on average that 85% of the humans on the planet really dont give a Damn about adware/malware/spyware/foistware
untill it directly affects them as im sure PG has seen 100's of times

Sales may go up. But getting people to think about infections etc. I doubt most of the end users out there wanna know. Most important thing to them is..."Get someone to fix it. I got me nails to do.

Nothing wrong with Barney dancing crow ... well ok, maybe there is, he's big and silly and aimed at little kids lol. Maybe if they had her parade around in a swimsuit emblazoned with logos it might help lol. As for me, I vote PG in a dodgy coat for our spokesperson
Want to get the public's attention?
Hit them with a barrage of invoices for spyware removal. Scare their wallets - then they may start to care.
Unfortunately, the masses lemming their way to wonderful "solutions" like AOL's security suite, and repeatedly ignore sound advice like "you know, this AV software you have expired three years ago - it's not helping you at all. Would you like me to install AVG's free edition while I've got it on the bench?" (would you believe the response was "No, I like this one - it never bothers me."?)
I guess today's user, brought up on buggy operating systems, doesn't mind repeated wipe/reinstalls. They run it until it's a riddled mess, then use that trusty restore cd to set it all straight - well, except for the data loss, that is.
