The Iraq/China Cyber war with LoU was before this one back in around 97-98. It ended with LoU having to release Iraqi and Chinese government servers back over and giving up control of the time warner satellite they took over to broadcast messages at the bottom of TV screens (although they never actually got any messages broadcasted)
I remember that one - I partially covered it on an old version of this site, but refrained from doing so again because - well, there wasn't a great deal to actually write about. You basically covered it all in a paragraph after all!
...damn, if only they'd managed to broadcast some of that stuff
I still can't believe the majority touts these as "wars" or "world wars" even "cyber-world wars." They're really more of a turf battle if anything, the only things really screwed up were some websites that should have had a good backup. If it hobbles all internet traffic for more than 30 minutes, then its time to get be worried about a "cyber war"
Actually, the chinese were pumping out some heavy duty DoS attacks close to the end of this whole thing. but they couldnt co-ordinate properly and it all went a bit tits-up.
The first hacker war? Are you forgetting the whole 1980's era conflict between the MOD and Legion of Doom?
Once again - I'm not saying the is the first *hacker* war. I'm saying this was a contender for the first hacker *world* war, as in, on a global scale that went beyond sibling rivalry.
I was more thinking about the .NF wars... 3 groups kept taking over the .nf dns servers and repatching them to block out the next group to see who could keep control of such domains as '*********.makes.me.go.uNF.uNF.u.NF'

LoU owned china back in 98, back when stack overflows were as easy to find as thongs on a San Diego beach. They also took over a satalite dish, and some other notable things. Its sad they died off though. Too much heat will burn up anything it seems.
