Seems you can't trust anyone these days..
Actually the real problem is that most people don't patch as a result of lack of understanding or simply refuse to. A zillion out of a zillion +2 times the exploit has already been long patched when someone got 0wn3d and all of a sudden think they know everything about security.

Auto update is a bad idea. To many of MS's patches fix one thing and break three others.

Yes, you need to update and patch, not doing that would be suicidal
But the smarter move is to wait a day or two after they patches come out to see if they have problems or nasty surprises.
For example the EULA for MS's new anti-piracy update forbids uninstalling it. Needless to say I don't want something like that on my system...
