You're unfortunately not the first person to realize the crippleware that is Media Player 11.

Gravatar Thanks Ferg, I did a bit of Googling but didn't find anything

...ouch, thats nasty. i passed my WGA test (unlike the first guy) but it still screwed the PC. thankfully i got lucky, and system restore reverted me back to WMP 10.

Gravatar I installed WMP11 and IE 7 about the week after they dropped, when there was no hue and cry, just random posts on forums.

I haven't had problem one. Of course, I don't use either of them except for very specific things: Windows updates, downloads from MS's website, actual WMVs, etc.

Elsewise I use Firefox and Media Player Classic/Real Alternative/Quicktime Alternative.

MPC is supposed to handle WMVs, but that's always been a problem for me.

Gravatar WGA Arghhhhhhhhh that causes more problems for normal Users than almost anything else talk about drive you nuts Thanks Bill :0(

Gravatar Ah, I see yet another has fallen for the upgrade bug. And security people wonder why we always set automatic updates to false. WGA aside, we simply don't want crap like this to be foisted on us. -.-

IIRC the WMP11 upgrade only works properly in OEM PCs. In self-built PCs there's a higher chance of failure for some reason... but that's not the end of it. WMP11 looks nice and all, but removes some important features - there's no longer a built-in screen capture function, for example (my sister uses that a lot, and BOY WAS SHE PO'D... well, I did tell her to switch to VLC, but she didn't want it). You also have to jump through hoops to roll it back.

IE7... well, I'd say it's nice and all, but it's the first time I've ever seen a memory hog worse than Firefox. I guess we all have to throw in more RAM into our computers someday. It simply won't play so nice with 256MB.

You know a company's headed in the wrong direction when 3rd party update and software vendors are trusted more than the OS's original vendor.

Gravatar This is a fascinating post! It could not have been expressed better.
