I think it's been around for a while. Here's the Urban Dictionary definition.

Well, now I'll have to actually go and buy the book, to see what the hoopla is about.

It's deliciously horrible. Plus, you can read it in about an hour.

Meh. I mean it, meh.
I read the book that Brown derives most of his basic set of pseudo-facts from, The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, years ago -- and it was obvious to me what a fabrication it all was. That Brown's book has turned into a bestseller doesn't make it fundamentally better than THBatHG (that is, about as solid and captivating as warmed-over tripe).
And yes, I know a judge went and decided that Brown hadn't plagiarised THBatHG. That doesn't make his book original -- just not plagiarised enough to be actionable.

I agree, it's hilarious that people are blowing a gasket about a movie adaptation of a novel. But it's also a shame that people could become so colossally offended. I thought that perhaps the West was more tolerant than, say, the Middle East. I was wrong, I guess.
Anyhow, I guess I'll check out the book at the library, just so I don't have to spend money on it.
'Sides, Tom Hanks' hair looks horrible in the movie pix.

I say, steal a copy.
FWIW, the 'Overreaction' I cite was in India. Technically not the 'West'. But plenty of Americans and Europeans are up in arms about it, too. Just no death threats that I'm aware of.

...nor riots in the streets, either.
I thought the book was pretty boring, actually.
