Excellent Analysis. I don't know if we'll ever know if themole was a rethug plant or a lefty who misguidedly tried to push back. Another note on the flaming hipocricy the right displayed about this whole thing is how the students contact information ended up on the front page of so many righty blogs. However, there are many, many duplicate returns on that search. Also, some of those, inlcuding the hits to LGF, are in comments.

Hello from Australia! My thinking has "moved on" since I sent that email. I agree that themole is probably not connected to Michael Crook. My reading is he/she is either mentally ill, or some kind of neo-Nazi, or both. (Hmm, can you be a neo-Nazi without being mentally ill?)
You are quite right that too many people jumped to conclusions about who was giving out Ms Malkin's home address. Too many people think that politics is just "the left" vs "the right" as seen in newspapers etc. The real wackos rarely get covered in the media, until they kill someone. Perhaps people are hoping that ignoring the Nazi-oid types will make them go away. I would rather see the media exposing them to public scrutiny.

But couldn't themole be a whitesupremacist who thought this would be a good way to "kill 2 birds with one stone"? He villifies the left, and he damages Malkin, who, although he agrees with her racist tones, he dislikes her for not being white?

I won't fix the link since you nuked it from Chris's, but themole basically just posted the phrase I googled along with "HAHAHAH Payback's a Bitch, Bitch" an and excerpt of the same article excerpted at that DU thread.

Chris - not a problem. Clearly anyone who's been following this whole thing is going to be able to find the info if they really want to, but I guess it's worth maintaining the principle of not making it any easier for them.
Bas - it gets more and more interesting. Good work. As for DU - it can get pretty crazy over there. I don't mind anger so much, but prefer it filtered through snark, an aversion to assuming collective guilt and at least a modicum of self-restraint. And, you know, recognition of when the opposition is holding out a fig leaf.

Quick technical note: RIPE.net is not an ISP - it's simply a registry of IP blocks, and covers all European IPs. If you do a whois on the ARIN server and it's a European IP, it'll say it's registered to RIPE because the ARIN server's too dumb to do a recursive lookup (the same thing occurs with IPs registered in Asia or Australasia, which are handled by APNIC). To find out which ISP the user is on, check out http://www.ripe.net/whois and enter in the IP.
It's likely to be an open proxy, but you might get lucky.

I have been following various for almost a year now, and this posting of personal info is a dangerous game.
I think much of this is done by these charismatic media personalities is really for spot light chasing.
The sensationalism has reached the point where, I believe, they really want to cause a disaster from this irresponsible journalism, whether it causes harm to others or themselves, for the attention.
