Totally OT, except insofar as it pertains to carryings-on at the South side of the planet. But I just found out about more immorality amongst penguins. I know you've been all over this penguin-iquity like a lonely seal, so perhaps you've already covered this, although I didn't see it in your links to the evils that occur in Kiwi-land. It's amazing how much useful information one can find on teh Internets tubes.

Hillary is pretty adept at that Southern strategy, I've noticed.

I just love to see people who know absofuckinglutely BUPKIS about the south who love to postulate that all racist crackers on the planet LIVE DOWN HERE.
Couldn't be more wrong if you were Neil Young, and I generally love Neil Young.
Check out the few remaining active pods o'klan activity in this country, and you'll notice that the majority are IN THE CORN BELT, not the cotton/sugar belt. Indiana, Ohio (gotta love Cincy's annual race riots!), Iowa, Illinois (Southern Illinois, granted), etc.
CRACKERS ARE NOT EXCLUSIVE OR ENDEMIC TO THE SOUTH, in case y'all haven't noticed by now.
And for someone who's been here, MJS, I would expect better. Much better. It's one thing to be southern, it's another entirely to be a cracker bigot. The two are not mutually inclusive, and you of all people ought to fucking know that. Paul, I don't know you, but fuck you very much for piling-on.
RACISM IS AN AMERICAN PROBLEM, not just a Southern problem, and the more that people of privilege continue to perpetrate that stereotype in our mass media, the longer that they can feel content and pompous upon their wealthy "liberal" thrones of judgement. And the longer that Southerners will have to fight against the ignorance and hatred that they have not always earned. I'm sick and fucking tired of having to defend myself and those like me to people who are allegedly of like minds. You bitch at Hillary for daring usurp the male hierarchy by "dividing the party" by ACTUALLY TRYING TO FINISH THE FUCKING RACE (as sloppily as she's doing it), but you sit here and DENIGRATE PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO ACHIEVE THE SAME PROGRESS THAT YOU CLAIM TO HAVE ALREADY ACHIEVED.
It's shit like this that TRULY holds us back, that keeps us from becoming a TRULY United States of America. Racism, classism, regional bigotry --- they are all fueled by ignorance and empowered by stereotypes. Again, I expect better of you.

annti: you have missed the point of the post by a wide, wide margin. The so-called "southern strategy" actually is employed everywhere, in that trigger words/code words seep into the collective, and then are used to exploit people's (sometimes unconscious) prejudices. I wrote a post satirizing "awesome Obama" awhile back and had not ruled out supporting Hillary. FWIW: I voted for John Edwards in the CA primary, even though his candidacy was already done.
If Hillary is the Democratic candidate in November, I will vote for her. But if you read the Conason piece in Salon you would have noted that Hillary had the casual idiocy to invoke "working, hard-working Americans, white Americans"--a statement that sucks whether it was conscious manipulation or latent pandering.
The desired-for death of the "southern plan" is hardly a knock against the south, but rather a knock against any tactics that play on our prejudices, everywhere in these here United States. I will say that you, Miss Annti, have painted "others" with such broad strokes and yet never seem to notice when you engage in the same generalizing you claim you loathe. Take a breath (or light another smoke), read the article, read the parody, and tell me again what my meaning is.
Also, you wrote "You bitch at Hillary for daring usurp the male hierarchy..." What the fuckity fuck? Who are you referring to? Who is the who in "you?"

You reference "Southern Man". "Cracker dads" references NASCAR dads. Talk about trigger words/code words.
Southern men have nothing to do with the fact that Hillary Clinton will do anything to win. Nobody said they did, I know. And yet, there they are.

So Nixon's Southern Strategy has finally come full circle: Neil Young is a cracker.
"You" as in the well-off white hetero male hierarchy of the Democratic party, from the neighborhood caucus on up. Not you personally, I'm talking about all of the men who think that Olbermann's threat of violence against Hillary was "perfectly logical" and "funny." All of the men who think that Hillary should GIVE UP "for the good of the party," when if she were a white male in the same position, the words would never once have been uttered. If John Edwards had made it this far, not a single soul would've uttered a peep of anything similar.
And pumpkin, as much as you decry my "broad strokes," you fail to realize how much of my so-called hyperbole is based upon LIFE EXPERIENCES and REAL INTERACTIONS with said yankees, mid-westerners, Californians & other whaaaat people who are just as prone to bigotry and recidivism as any Southerner. I've met bigots from Brooklyn, So. Cal (esp. Orange County!), LawnGuyland, Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Oregon, New Mexico --- most of this country, wherever I go, I've met these people. From all income ranges, from all professions (or lack thereof), from every imaginable kind of upbringing, whether they follow their parents' mindsets or not.
You presume that I just make this shit up because it sounds good in a sermon, Jivester, and one would think, that if you'd been paying attention at ALL, all of these years, that you'd know far better than that. I may not be a big mucky-muck in So. Cal, I may not have a career, for that matter, but y'know what? I have lived. And from that, rather than from the best possible education (which I surely have not had, we all know that), I have learned the most.
I cannot even begin to pretend that I know what was in Hillary's mind or soul when she hit those "code words," but I'm not the only person who doesn't buy-into the dog-pile upon her as a "bigot" for her "poor choice of words." Maybe Hillary is trying to ADD to her coalition of supporters by addressing the people who have been ignored for the past 9 years of presidential politics, the people whose jobs have been shipped to Mexico and China and India and Bangladesh by NAFTA, CAFTA and the FTAA. Thus far, aside from John Edwards, I've yet to see ANYONE attempt to address POOR PEOPLE whatsofuckingever, or to even admit THAT THEY EXIST. Granted, it's not especially endearing to hear her pump that "hard-working" bullshit, as it goes along with the class-warfare assumption that most people are poor SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY'RE LAZY.
You should know as well as I do that THE AMERICAN DREAM IS A HOLLYWOOD AND D.C. FUCKING MYTH. Very rare is the human being who truly came from "nothing" who made it to "the top" without the right connections, the right relations, the right foot in the right door. And it is in the ruling classes' best interest to keep pushing that myth, through politicians, through mass media, through whatever means necessary, to dangle that carrot before the working poor, to keep the believing that they will cross the color and class lines without the same help that the born-to-money have always had.
Most of all, it is in the republicunts' best interest to keep reminding the country that they should HATE the poor, to think of us as WELFARE QUEENS as Saint Ronnie Ray-Gun commanded, because then that means that their lives are somehow more meaningful, more important, more valuable than the poor motherfucker who could be them with one missed paycheck, thanks to a capitalist economy and society that depends so heavily on fucking the working class, the working poor, and the poor, period.
Maybe that was Hillary's clumsy attempt to reach back in time to help the constituents in Arkansas who never got decent educations or good job training or the right connections and still worked their asses off and never got ahead. Poor people aren't a minority anymore, but try and get a politician to admit to that. Give the bitch half of a benefit of the doubt and try to see it from that perspective, before you automatically paint her with the "southern" brush, Nixon's ghost notwithstanding.
I know that some of you hoity-toity-type libruls mean well, and that you actually DO drive cross-country to help people and animals in the midst of a gubmint-sanctioned genocide. But at the same time, do you ever think of the poor people who have, to this day, never gotten a leg up, never gotten a fair shake, never had a snowball's chance in hell? I don't think that Obama's majority of followers ever really do. I don't think that Obama himself really does. I don't think that identifying himself with poor people or even acknowledging them would be good for his campaign chest.
So maybe we should stop with the stereotyping Nixon-era bullshit and develop new terminology for old-school politickin'. You know as well as I do that it ain't just Southerners who think that way, historical reference or not.
But one thing that I will never understand about you, dear Jivester, is how you automatically assume that I "don't get it." I may have missed the Nixon reference in the "southern strategy" label, but I got it, honey, I definitely got it.

You cover a lot of turf, annti. Much obliged for your detailed response.
