At age 50, for the first time, I truly fear for the future of my country. I find it truly ironic that the same people who claim not to trust some government bureaucrat to choose your doctor, or to manage your old age social insurance, will turn around and trust the government to identify who should be locked away, tortured, and never have the opportunity for a review in the light of day.
Under this bill, they even take away the right to see the evidence against you. But you do have the right to respond to it. (huh?) This is such a travesty that today, I truly mourn for my country and I want to hold onto any hope that something may be done to reverse it.
So I will go forth and vote for Democrats, because even though they were too spineless to stop it, at least they were not its engineers. And the turncoat Democrats who made a filibuster impossible can rot in hell, if such a thing exists, along with every Republican in that godforsaken place.

Yes, this is a pretty sad week for America. But I'm not giving up, quitting, rolling over and dying, or any of that.
Here's a long list of good people running this November. Most are running against long odds. I've given what I can to their campaigns, and I'm going to keep supporting them.
Remember this: Nothing makes Reichsmarshall Rove happier than hearing us say "OK there's no point voting for a Democrat" or "I'm just giving up".

Even the US, apparently, did not have a sufficient Constitution to survive the poison in its system.
What a horrible legacy for those who died in the World Trade Center. Their deaths have provided the rationale for legalized torture and the end of habeas corpus.
The facism that our nation displayed during the McCarthy era simply went underground. Now it blossoms on right wing poison, killing our most fundamental values and rights.

As I went home from work last night, I was acutely aware of all the people around me who apparently didn't even know that their country had taken a huge jump down the road to dictatorship.
I tried to think of ways to frame this issue so most people would understand, but I couldn't figure out a way to work new cars, status symbols or 'winning' into it.
A conversation with one of my Republican bellweathers confirmed that I don't have a clue how to convey the enormity of this law to the unaware. He just said, "Eh. It just applies to terrorists. Stop worrying."
Pray for us all. Pray for true freedom. Work for change. Stay strong.

I said to a buddy the other day "If you had told me KO would turn out to be the guttsiest journalist on t.v., I'd have said 'Yeah. Sure. Thank you President Clinton, for being the last President of the United States. I didn't always agree with your policies, you were the last of many great men and women who kept the Faith - you upheld and defended the Constitution of the United States of America.

I've lived in a false world. I raised my children to never hurt another, telling them is hurts them by making them see others as objects. I'd grown up thinking that torture was an ineffective methodology because the victims say anything and everything.
I patriotically assumed that our justice system and moral example of doing "the right thing" were a beacon to the world. I read too much propaganda and believed that we'd all move to future where "truth, justice and the American way", in all its wondrous glory would be the way the world would thrive.
Thanks to the Republicans in Congress, aided and abetted by a bunch of spineless Democratic Representatives and Senators I've been disabused of this false concepts.
I can't seem to muster the strength to thank them.

You want to know where the Democratic Party's Tom DeLay and Karl Rove are? NOWHERE. And we should be thankful.
Rove and DeLay and Cheney et al are sucessful because they are corrupt con men, who will sell out any and all sense of loyalty, honor, and principle in a heartbeat. They trade the long-term health of our country for an immediately gratifying "win", and like a drug addict they have to keep upping the destructive doesage higher and higher to get the desired effect, until there's nothing left but an emaciated shell of a once-beautiful, vibrant country.
This is not a coincidence: it is a direct result of their policies and tactics. This happens because they put nothing--not even God Him/Her/Itself--above their ambition and avarice. It's hubris of the worst sort: doing harm because they can, because they enjoy it. I've watched them destroy the state of Texas for the past ten years, and now I've watched them do the same to America.
We need fewer men like this in politics, not more, and if the current corruption investigations are allowed to continue, we will get exactly that. And maybe, just maybe, we can purge this infection from the body politic and start on the slow road to recovery.
We do not need a Democratic karl Rove or Tom Delay, we need to reinstate the House ethics rules and strengthen them, so that anyone convicted of bribery is automatically kicked out of Congress and not allowed to work for a lobbying firm or campaign ever again.
We need to destroy the revoloving door between congressional staff and lobbying firms that Tom Delay built.
We need the Fairness Doctrine resinstated. We need to reduce media consolidation.
We need campaign reform.
We do not need more dirty tricksters who would send their grandmothers to Gitmo if it upped their stock price 5% this quarter.
I swear, if the Dems ever become controlled by the equivalents of these evil con men, I will leave the party. And that's the only thing that will make me walk away.

My biggest fear now is that we'll lose Justice Stevens before the Supreme Court declares the bill unconstitutional.
If we don't win back Congress in November, I think I might be headed for Sweden or Canada. In my case, I might do it regardless as I've already been warned about a massive callup of reservists in December. I've already served enough time for the administration's wars and won't serve another day.

I propose a campaign to get every so called Rep. of the people to walk out just as BUsh is about to give his "State of the Union Speech. Short of that they should stand and turn their backs on him and remain so.

I'm just a lowly blogger, but maybe with others such an event can be accomplished.
I wrote every member of Congress last year to do the above.
As I have not given up non violence yet, will somebody please join me in this campaign? I would like to focus the intial energy to Reps and Senators who Voted agaiinst these latest measures and who voted against the War.
Since all rights have been abolished we really don't need a Congress anyway.

I studied the founders in college, graduate school, and law school. I loved the majesty and energy of the great democratic vbision. I made made political philosphy my concentration and love.
That was 30-40 years ago and I've referred much of my thinking to that framework ever since. I've watched the resilience of the democratic process gradually slip under the onslaught of the right wing in this country. Like many, I'm depressed and fear this cycle will not end, or end well.
At such times, one looks, on the temporal level, to the Supreme Court to push back against tyranny. I'm not particularly sanguine about that-- or whether the executive and legislature would even abide by restraint were it ordered.

The country didn't die yesterday. It still has some life left in it as long as we all remember those who voted to end our liberties and kill off our ideals. We must remember those who voted in favor the the Military Commissions Act, and we must hold them accountable. Republicans and democrats alike, all who voted for this travesty must be removed from office as soon as possible.
In the meantime, we can only hope the the Supreme Court still stands as a co-equal branch of government. That those justices still remember their duty to the nation and its constitution. If they fail us, then we really are doomed.

I’d have to say, I once thought terrorists were just religious nuts trying to get their 40 virgins. I thought 9/11 was a cowardly, yet simplistic attack.
Today, I realize how sophisticated crashing unarmed civilian airplanes into buildings really was. That single move has our country perilously close to destruction. Why hasn't Al Queda attacked again? Because they don't need to. We'll do far more damage to ourselves than some cult of nuts with AK47s ever will.
We have played right into their hands. Knowing how badly we needed to go into Iraq, and being able to foresee (unlike us) the costly aftermath, they were able to bank on us depleting our treasury. Of course, this means more cuts to social programs and schools, ensuring we will be weak in the future. Then we really go the extra mile to appease them and take away our own rights to show them just how tough we are.
We now have secret prisons and full government control of our personal lives with no court oversight. The mere mention of terrorism and you can disappear forever with no trial. Hell, who needs evidence when you have torture. With torture, it's only a matter of time before you get whatever confession you like.

I have two dd214's. Twice I enlisted in the service of my country, a country whose motives were somehow held in high regard by most of the world.
Now I have to say goodbye to the old country. We have officially become a goose stepping nation reminescent of pre wwII germany. I greive over this change, it tears at my soul. Evil has crept over the nation, taken it's soul. I will vote again in Nov to out the evil, but I doubt the votes will be counted and there is a good chance we won't even be allowed to vote, should GWBushit decide to nuke Iran.
I am ready to fight for our constitution, against all enemies, internal and external. But one person is going to be somewhat inefective and I fear that I will just become what's his name tilting at windmills.
Fear will be our neighbor from here on out. Will voicing my opinion on this site be construed as aiding and abetting the terrorists? I'm stunned.

I forwarded your call to action yesterday to 20 people and asked them to do the same.
An admittedly small consolation is that there were some good, strong speeches yesterday that recognized the horrible import of this vote. The reps who are finally showing some willingness to speak out need as much encouragement, shaming, goading, whatever as we can give them.
Every time they say "cut and run Democrats" Democrats have to say "torture Republicans". Every time they say "they hate our freedoms" someone has to say "you trample on our freedoms". Every time they say some want to "coddle terrorists" someone has to say "you are destroying the constitution, you are dishonoring the principles Americans have shed blood for for over 200 years".
Even when networks rehashed the Clinton /Wallace interview to show how "unhinged" Clinton was, I saw people cheering Clinton on. MSM is scared to show this righteous anger, and quick to marginalize and ridicule it, but many people are hungry to see it, and they respect it. Our representatives who have any sense of conscience and duty have to risk being called "unhinged" and "terrorist-coddlers" and "cut-and-runners" and hit back hard, and again and again until the bullies on the right look like as pathetic and ineffectual as Joe McCarthy did at the end.

Ben Franklin's words still ring true today. I am worried about whether the SCOTUS would actually follow the law instead of partisan hackery. I really can't see it.
This is squarely on the WH and its GOP allies, because none of this would have happened if they were patriots and faithful to the oaths they swore on Bibles to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic. I'm sure God will be amused about that when the time comes for them.
It's the military oath as well, and we may (eventually) see them voting with their feet.

Reporting for duty, even though it involves excrutiating pain to type - still can't hold a pen either but thought I should de-lurk for this post.
My opinion is not important here, as you know I'm not American, however, as someone who has ties to the U.S. (relatives of the Jr WhattheHs', neighbour's children working and taking out citizenship in the U.S., friends in the U.S. etc) I do have a great interest in your country.
Your country has survived and surmounted so many setbacks to democracy in the past: Benedict Arnold (who is a hero in UK history), you survived the infamous Salem witch trials, situations too numerous to mention during the early years, survived the masters of industry support of the Nazi regime, survived the terrible McCarthy communist witch hunts, survived the Bay of Pigs, the Cold War, the Nixon years, Vietnam, the Contra years (aka Reagan/North conspiracies) - I refuse to include the Lewinsky issue as that was a cooked up, irrational campaign to get at someone who engaged in consensual sexual relations which did not impact the security of your nation (Goodness knows, Ike did the same, as did FDR and so many others). Our War PM talked to his dead mother so we have our own issues! The difference is that up until now, we have never held our PM accountable to any issues outside of his/her ability to manage the governance of the country, which includes the use of tax dollars. Unfortunately, yours is a country that is insulated, and until lately has not taken the time to look outside itself and determine what other countries think of it. You have a large segment of the population who believe that religion should be part and parcel of the state, who remain uninformed about the running of a country in this global world, and you have a huge number of people who seem to want power at any cost, who cater to whatever interest that will give them power.
On the very Positive side, yours is a country of survivors and educated people, which I have learned from frequenting your site and a few others. Yours is a country full of principled people who have and will fight to protect those principles.
Yes, this latest attack from the Administration is a body blow, but I have faith that the Americans I know will not stand down. They will fight to reclaim their status as the most free nation in the world. They will fight to save their constitution against the cowardly, power hungry people who seek to enslave the American public to their own ends. They will fight smart and they will prevail. It may not happen this year, or in the next few years, but it will happen, because that's who you are. I have faith in you and all the wonderful Americans who know that this is wrong. You will PREVAIL.

I don't know what to say. Thank you all for sharing this struggle. I hope we win, but I'm not hopeful. I will vote for Democrats in November, but that will be the last time I vote for them if they win and impeachment proceedings and war crimes trials do not follow. I always thought education was the answer. I have tried giving away subscriptions to "The Nation", giving away copies of Zinn's book, and people will not read. "Addicted to War" is the easiest book to read that I have found, and probably an 8th or 9th grader could read it. It has pictures. I can honestly say that I have not educated anyone. What is probably needed is an historical comic book that an asshole can understand.

All joking aside, this bill makes me fearful for my own safety. You see, as an editor, I published a book about Jihad from the perspective of an American Jihadi. He hadn't taken up arms against his country, but he spoke in a language we can understand, and after 9/11 it was important, in my view, to understand that viewpoint, however abhorrent I and others may find it to be.
This bill makes it legal to arrest anyone at any time and treat them in any way, indefinitely, and in complete secrecy, with no accountability. Let me be clear: it will allow Bush administration thugs to "disappear" people not unlike a tinpot banana republic dictator. And torture them. Ever heard of "the submarine?" Your anus convulses just before you drown. It's a term Chilean torturers used to describe someone who was trying to get air any way they could as they waterboarded them. Dissenters? Troublemakers? Seekers of truth? People who read this blog? You're all marked. The current rhetoric is to cast Democrats as facilitators of Islamic terrorism who are "on the other side." Don't think they won't exercise their prerogatives, starting at the top.
They say that the first casualty of war is truth, but that the second casualty is the political opposition. Given my participation as a dissenter, a troublemaker, a seeker of truth, I would not be surprised if I should also be tagged as a facilitator of terrorism, though it could not be further from the truth. But what does that matter now?

See, the first and hardest step is to get over the hurt, the hurt of being forcibly separated from a very important and once-nourishing idea, that the USA is this and that. It's the let down, the feeling of having -lost- something, that is the most painful.

Under this administration our elected servants have forfeited the right to call this country a democracy - more concerned with giving it to foreign countries than they are about spreading it at home. How far we've fallen in such a short time. I am making plans to move to Canada as soon as I can find a job. I am ashamed to be an American on this day, when the light of our great country was extinguised. I never thought I could be more depressed than when the election was stolen the first time, but I was wrong. America, where have you gone? The grand experiment is over now that the assaults upon human dignity and other laws that form the cement which used to bind us as a nation and allow the strong and the weak to live together in peace have been torn into pieces.

I mentor many young activists, and I truly believe that the things that are happening in the netroots and grassroots are much more important, and will be much more lasting, than today's travesty in Washington. Not only is the outrage palpable, but so is the sense that change is not only possible, but essential. The seeds of change - of greater democratization and a more egalitarian society - are being planted all around us and are coming to fruition all around us. The new technologies don't just enable it, but mandate it.
To begin with, we may well take one or both houses of Congress in November, and even if we don't there are bound to be several *authentic* progressives elected, and that in itself will make a huge difference. But beyond that, there is plenty of progressive social and political change happening on the ground that no one in Washington can stop.
Trust me, General - the best is yet to come...and it won't be too far away...

Who would have thought that Kafka's 'The Trial' would become a How To book.
The worst part is there's nowhere else to go. It was a great country (if you don't look back at slavery, Okies, Japanese concentration camps and Kennedy's war on communism in Southeast Asia). But the 230 year battle seems to have been lost. We can only hope that the numbers of those who are tired and hungry and disgusted grow to outnumber the rigged voting machines and ID required polling places we are soon to be greeted with.

The federalist gave us a constitution that omitted a Bill of Rights, legalized slavery, denied woman rights, and the biggie, prohibited 95% of American's from voting. no wonder this intent is so appealing to them.
The anti federalist Patrick Henry demanded 40 amendments be atached to the constitution. 3 years later he won us 25 of the 40, five alone are found in the 1st amendment.
The day the anti-federalist kicked tyrant butt, and atached the Bill of Rights, reafirming unalienable rights usurp and over rule the power and authority of government, is the day America started a civil cold war, and why we are US vs THEM, blue VS red.
