At this point in her career Ms. Atwood could pee on a napkin and sell it so I don't think book signing tours are a necessity in her life. I have a funny feeling she patented this device to raise questions about authorship, the moving hand, and the relationship between the reader and the author. Note: the physical disconnect between the author and reader is reinforced by her device. The author sits behind a screen and writes. At the same time, the reader interacts with the writer through an indirect medium (ie. the internet), just as she does when reading a book.
