Gravatar "I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part." Playing that part is Senator Kerry.

Gravatar "If an originalist analysis was applied to the Fourteenth Amendment, women would not be provided equal protection under the Constitution, interracial marriages could be outlawed, schools could still be segregated and the principle of one man, one vote would not govern the way we elect our representatives," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat.

Nice... Real nice... Madam Senator.

Gravatar Guess we'll find out - cloture vote scheduled for Monday morning.

THe bombing starts in...

If an intelligent analysis were applied by liberals to real-world situations, they would be conservatives.

I must, however, give credit where credit is due. Cheers to several Democrat senators who have announced that they will be voting for cloture and confirmation. I was not surprised to hear that Senator Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) was among them (as he has a re-election battle in a very red state to win, but I was very surprised to hear that Senator Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) was doing likewise. Anyone have any ideas why he is breaking from the loony fringe that runs his party?

Gravatar Anyone have any ideas why he is breaking from the loony fringe that runs his party?

West Virginia = increasingly conservative state. It's a reelection year. Solve for x.

Gravatar Politics. WVA is trending "red" and Byrd needs to cast himself as something more than a blank check for the state. While there isn't yet a GOP candidate that I think will seriously challenge him in the fall, it's no secret that the NRSC has been actively recruiting one for some time and the fear is that they eventually will find one and provide substantial financial backing. This seems especially likely since they are not going to waste much money on Kathrine Harris in Florida.

Gravatar More interesting to me is the reverse phenomenon with Lieberman. He's voting against Alito to make nice with his base, because he will no doubt be facing both a tough primary challenge and also probably a challenge from somewhere on the left this November. It's a risk because there are no doubt many Republicans who are serioiusly considering voting for him in November, and this might come back to haunt him.

Yeah, but c'mon. This is Robert Byrd. If he thinks a yea vote for Alito is going to make voters forget his ridiculous liberal tirades on the Senate floor, he is definitely out of it.

Mouldy, I wonder: If the NRSC hasn't found a major Republican candidate to challenge Byrd yet, do you think they will? It's already January.

As for this comment:

It's a risk because there are no doubt many Republicans who are [seriously] considering voting for [Lieberman] in November . . .

You mean were considering voting for him. He is shifting back into Sore Loserman territory.

Gravatar Senator Dole seems confident that they will. Their best chance was to convince one of the current GOP House members to challenge him. I can't remember her (at least I think it was a she) name, but the consensus best bet declined. My guess is they will convince her or someone else who previously declined to change their mind and mount a challenge. WVA GOP is not as inept as the NY GOP seems to be when it comes to finding statewide candidates. This is of course in light of the recent machinations with respect to the GOP challenger to Sen. Clinton.

Gravatar It was Capito, and she would have had an excellent shot to defeat Byrd. I believe there are four people in the primary, and the RSCC is going to heavily back whoever comes out of that one.

As for the NY GOP- it's pretty much dead, let alone inept.

Gravatar Conrad in ND will vote yea, so that would make 59. Almost sure there would be one more yea - say, someone up for election to a full term in a neighboring state...

Gravatar yes, Capito, thanks Paul.

Isn't it funny how liberal politicians become much more conservative when they have to account to voters? This explains their desire to have the courts do their dirty work.

Give me time. I'll fix it.

Gravatar Give me time. I'll fix it.

You work on NY, and I'll work on Maryland. And then later we can throw snowballs at each other in hell.
