I thought it was traditional to RESPOND to the State of the Union. When did we begin to preempt it? Seems disrespectful for the opposition party to offer a rebuttal before the State of the Union was given. Did we do this before?

I did this last year. Not sure what you mean about opposition party seeing as I am a member of the President's party. And it's not a response per se, but it serves as a way for the PS community to share in their thoughts as the speech unfolds.
And let's face it, this thing is always so dull, no matter who the President is, that anything to spice up our enjoyment of it should be welcome
