Cornelius, it wasn't the footnote that made me Catholic, but it launched me on a quest that led me to the Church. It was actually an endnote: Note No. 21 beginning on p. 604 of Harold Berman's book, Law and Revolution: The Formation of the Western Legal Tradition (Harvard UP, 1983).
