Gravatar Could you possibly have used Clement's "Letter to the Corinthians"? It seems to me we have probably the earliest evidence of the Eastern Church's appealing to the Church of Rome, the bishop of Rome. And no, it is not simply saying that the bishop of Rome is "first among equals" but actually, the primate of the whole Church to which an appeal can be made and an outcome determined. Of course, Clement demonstrates a fine example of good deplomacy in his letter, I think.

I cannot imagine the present Orthodox community having the present pope "meddle in the affairs of the Orthodox Christians in Corinth" today.
