I read Boyer's piece last week. It is a very good article, and I got the same impression: He has done his homework, and writes like someone with an amazingly broad and incisive knowledge of the Catholic Church in the U.S. If there are a few parts that hinge on the cynical, overall it paints a very accurate picture.
