St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross ... how very timely, in light of recent discussions concerning the liturgy and Judaism. Here is a beautiful essay by Edith Stein on The Prayer of the Church:

Senor Papist,
By chance where did you come across this book?

Gravatar Mr. Fagan, It's been advertised and out for some time. I don't remember where I first saw it. Most recently, I was reminded of it by a notice in a newsletter of the Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Culture. But read the book. Even more importantly, read Stein. Her material on Husserl and Aquinas is very insightful, particularly as to the interface she sought between phenomenology and Thomism, and her material on the philosophy and theology of woman and the nature of empathy is outstanding.

Gravatar I've been reading her letters. Fascinating person.

Gravatar Stein had a profound sense of the transcendence of the Holy Mass, and of the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Here is an article about her 1933 letter to Pope Pius XI concerning the situation of the Jews in Germany:

The text of the letter is included in the article.

Gravatar I'm surprised that there hasn't been more commentary about Edith Stein here. St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross would certainly side with the Traditionalists in wanting to restore the majesty of the Roman liturgy (she would be appalled at the liturgical abuses of the post-Vatican II era), yet would Edith Stein be comfortable with the SPPX?
