Doesn't Popcack surrender his point at the end, when he claims that human equality and dignity are only revealed truths? They must be religious, then, as philosophy and science do not build from revelation.
Human equality is asserted in the declaration of independence, but I thought that the leftists and secularists consider that propaganda, while the Constitution, "living," is law.
On equality, they would say racism is bigoted but the notion of personhood and consciousness as the basis of dignity is reasonable, as it pertains to all humans equally, equitably. And, of course, the reasonable wins out over the revelation in law.
I thought the correct argument against Singer or Wills was that their notion of personhood is flawed. It is philosophically arbitrary, emotionally untenable, and biologically irrelevant. But I'll let the experts figure that out. That's just what I've been hearing.

According to St. Thomas Aquinas, they can and do build from revelation.
