You'll soon find that you're able to do almost nothing without a social security number, and it's worth having it memorized when it arrives. We're not really supposed to have a universal ID number here, but this is as close as it gets. I was initially surprised that you were able to get a bank account without one, but I think I had the same thing. Once you get your number and tell the bank to apply it to your account (which you'll need to for tax reporting) then you start building credit history. I predict that in exactly one year from doing this you will be suddenly buried in credit card offers!
