Anything you need, we're there. You tell that to your lovely wife of yours, as well.
Thank fucking god it's stage zero, but I still hear you. Cancer.
Your liberal use of the word "fuck" in a post is refreshing.
May your family, friends, and a good part of the blogosphere send you many positive vibrations that travel right up your colon and knock that cancer on it's ass, so to speak.

hmmm nice of google to provide the colon cancer ads, just don't click on them ok? they'll kick you out.
Hang in there Derek. Nothing I can say really, but you're doing all the right things. There are times in our lives when one little instant changes the way we look at the world, completely. Take advantage of that opportunity.
All the best to you, and good luck, and see you at Gnomedex!

Hey Buddy. Sorry to hear about the news but I think the good thing is that it is benign and Colorectal has a very specific pathogenesis so you are very much in control of prevention. Good thoughts sending your way. Not too bad. A little surgery, lifestyle changes and on you go. Take care of yourself.

I applaud you for doing everything up to this point to get an early jump on this. I've been reading all your previous posts about getting checked out with some chuckles, but this isn't a laughing matter anymore.
If anything, I really hope other people out there will take everything you have gone through, are going through, and will go through to heart. It wonderful that you've blogged about this because it will help bring awareness to a very serious health issue that many folks need to take seriously.
Hang in there and take care of yourself. We'll be hoping for the best.

Read your wife's blog and yes, the word Fuck entered my mind....it also featured on your wife's blog with a link....curiousity, my second name, often gets me into trouble, but just a thought from Scotland and more specifically, the Highlands, where most of the best Whisky comes from...when my uncle developed terminal melanoma in California, I spent time comforting my own upset by visiting as many local distillieries as I could find. Not only for the distraction from my sadness, but also for the chance to take home a wider variety of malts. Their use, when I spoke to him on the 'phone, was of great value. Call me a wimp...when I'm upset I need something to numb the pain and allow me to rationalise my use of it. (knowledge of local distilliries). That said, I still agree...Fuck!

So sorry to hear the news. I'm upset with you. In the past month or two, two people in my circle of friends my age have been diagnosed with cancer. I hope and pray you will have a quick recovery and clean bill of health soon. Hugs to you, Air and the girls. Thanks for sharing and blogging.

Wow, that's shocking news - I'm sorry to hear it. Having gone through a similar procedure last year, I know how frightening it can all be.
I remember years ago when you discovered you had diabetes after what seemed an endless consumption of Big Gulps. I still have a photo of you just days before you found out. It's a testament to what you can go through and survive.
What I remember most about that time is how, while sitting in the hospital, you simply wanted a textbook on what diabetes is. You learned it. I've always admired that about you: the ability to learn pretty much any topic to an expert level.
I'm thinking of you. Let me know how I can help.

Alistair, one of these days I'm going to find that photo in my archive -- I do have it -- and post it online. Thank you everyone. With luck everything will be over on the 24th, and that will be the end of it.
Get it? The end of it? Ha ha!

Derek, I'm sending good thoughts your way, and I just said a little prayer.
I guess there's something to be said for the fact that not only do you have the support of your family and friends, but from complete strangers as well.
Rock on.

That's rotten news, but it looks like you have a large team rooting for you, and timing was apparently in your favor (cold comfort, but there it is). So count those blessings (yes, there are some) and keep up the spirits (liquid and otherwise).

Derek,
You've got it right. Undifferentiated cells are like embryonic cells--they have no real function. The worst neoplastic tumors are those that have aberrant cells in them that have no resemblance to the normal tissue in their surroundings. Also, the level of invasiveness and metastasis increases with decreased differentiation. Basically, if you're going to have a cancerous tumor, differentiation is a good thing.

I'm sorry to hear your news. I'm glad that you have Dr. Enns on your side. I know he works with my GI and that he's among the best in the city. I don't have cancer, but I'm screened for it regularly and I've gone through a lot of the GI tests. If you need any non-medical perspective on any of the tests, I'd be happy to give you some information.

Hey there,
Having survived cancer (stage 2 seminoma), I can say it sucks. But like another commenter said, you've got a bunch of things (and people) on your side. So it's all good. But still...fuck! Ahem.

Derek,
That sucks. I wish you a speedy recovery. One of my closest friends, aged 34, was diagnosed last year with testicular cancer. As a one ball man, he now leans a little to the left, but is otherwise none the worse for wear. Your story has encouraged me to visit my GP for a checkup for the first time in three years. We've reached that stage of life, I guess.

Dear Derek:
You don't know me, nor I you. But we are both bloggers, and your 2007 is starting wonderfully like my 2006. I spent 2006 first investigating, and then treating, bladder cancer.
Welcome to the club. And I'm fucking sorry you're in it. I hope you get through it. And try a Highland Park next time.
