Santiago Dreaming

Just finished my post on this subject, and clicked over here.

What can I say? The outsider's view and the insider's coincide...

Gravatar Dave Haxton (from Indiana) linked to an essay that echoes what you say here. I guess it was also on NPR. The essay is titled Is This Happening in America?

But, BW, that's not that surprising is it?

kathryn- link is not working but when I find the essay I will read it.

Found it here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/ wp...5090202020.html

Gravatar We have had friends from New Orleans staying with us, trying to get their daughter enrolled in school here for this year. The mother and daughter will live here in Austin while the Dad will stay in Houston where his company is relocating.

They were fortunate, in that they evacuated, their home was not flooded and they have some money. Yet, their lives have been turned upside down. They have now left to try to go back to there home to get some of their belongings, if they can get in. We helped them buy a chain saw and 12 gas cans yesterday so they can hopefully get down the streets to their house. The story of the one million people that did evacuate, has yet to be told. They are scattered around the country and world now.

Here is a commentary we all heard on NPR this past Wednesday which they said reflected how they felt.

Gravatar Thank you for sharing this, Martha. I am glad your friends had the means to leave the city and are safe. Andrei Codrescu words are a beautiful obituary for a great city.
