I agree, it's a pretty obscure ad. Possibly the fact that it causes you to pause and puzzle over its meaning is the objective. There are still a lot of these sort of ads floating around in colour supplement mags now; often used to advertise perfume. The suicide undertone seems ill advised in an ad for whisky.

Of couse we may be more cynical these days. Maybe back then people looking at this ad just thought the man had interupted his drinking of that fine whisky to go look at the sunset.
