So sorry to read about what a troubled time you've been having laP. I think loss of control is possibly an aspect of the anxiety surrounding death. Most of our lives are about gaining increasing control over everything and death is the ultimate antithesis of this. The more I ponder that, the more profound and at the same time mundane life can seem.

Is it something to do with the fact that you've been there a lot of times before and you're wondering how it might affect you this time? Forewarned is forearmed type of thing?
Death is just another stage in the cycle.
That is a small part of it, BW. And you are right, it is inching me closer to accepting death as just another stage in the cycle of life. Intellectually I understand this but accepting it emotionally has proved to be difficult.
I appreciated the depth of this post. I won't try to offer answers as I have none. It's just nice to know that so many people struggle with the same issues with which I have struggled since my freshman year of college. We are all a bit less alone as a result.

There is such a deeper ability to the mind and the soul... and the body, that is beyond our normal awareness.
I really believe that the human condition is built to survive and thrive because of this one thing... adaptability.
As you said, the calm that comes from the awareness of acceptance.

Michael and Tara- just found these comments and want to thank you both. Michael, as you point out we are all less along when we share and, Tara, adaptability is another key. Both do help make things less painful.
