While I agree with you wholeheartedly, in my own personal experience those who send me the misinformation-- when confronted with fact-- just don't care. Clarity is the enemy in their worldview, so what they send on to others need not be correct. It only need be fearful and filled with hate.
You can't fix stupid, no matter how much you try. Sadly.

You are probably correct, but if you keep calling them on it they will stop e-mailing you. That is a plus in my book.

That sort of thing makes me so angry.
I'm really pleased you've posted about it. Hopefully some Google traffic will alight here as a consequence.
I never send on emails forwarded to me, whatever the subject - the jokes are never funny and the facts are rarely true. I've found that ignoring people who send them on is very effective. Ignoring their every email actually

I send those hateful e-mails back to the sender with the true Snopes facts regarding the lies. If I only educate one person, it is a plus.
