I always ask their names and introduce myself to them. My friend who died last year, Pep, used to do it. He said that not being seen by people is the hardest part to being homeless.
I found that when I see them I recognize my own humanity on a level I never get elsewhere.
And now, I do it in memory of Pep, who taught me how to be a better human being in compassion to others. I too, feel moved to tears. My tears are about remembering who I am by connecting in gratitude to them.
Namaste means: the god within me bows to the god within you. And, I realize my giving them money is for me. It's for me.

Now you got me missing Pep. He was a sweet, sweet man.
