Nobody has mail delivered directly to their house. You can have a mailbox put up on your street but it probably won't be in front of your own house. It will be put up on some designated spot alongside other people's mailboxes. We did not do this when we first moved to town and right now I can not remember why not.

I can remember visiting an expat friend in Florida about 10 years ago, and he had his mail delivered to a box within his apartment building. Is that different?

Yes, The ones on the street look like this all lined up side by side. Sometimes they are all nailed to one long board. Most of them look pretty beatup.
