british cars ... the big ones were small by american standards, but quite comfortable and comparatively upmarket in the perspective of post-war british austerity

Gravatar They must have seen very small in 1955. That was when American cars really started getting larger and larger.

Gravatar The ad mentions that it's a Husky. I'd not heard of this model before. There's some detail here. It looks similar to a lot of the British cars from the 50s eg the Austin A30. I think you can see styling links with the Mk1 mini which came in 1959 and originated from the Midlands not far from the Rootes (Hillman) factory. If you want to see a truly ugly Hillman do an image search for the Hillman Imp; possibly one of the ugliest British cars ever made.

Gravatar I don't know why the Imp wasn't popular with crooks. If they made their escape in that car the cops wouldn't be able to tell if they were coming or going. The front looks like the back end of most cars. It looks tiny, too.

Gravatar I doubt the Imp would be fast enough for villains. Their car of choice in this period was the MkII Jaguar (this is getting circular eh?) - as driven by Inspector Morse. The MkII was, for a time, faster than the fastest police car. The cops then started to use them. The Imp has a cult following here (God knows why). I found out that they were sold in North America too, though I see from this brochure that they attempted (unsuccessfully) to sex it up by changing the back end.

Gravatar yeah, but if the thieves can't get off the planet, then batman and robin are bound to overtake them sooner or later

Gravatar drD- just looked at an image of the MKII and happy to find out it is the Jaguar I pictured in my mind as I read your comment. It is definitely near the top of the cool cars list.

tristan- OK, Batman's car can be on the list too.
