A colleague of mine said that they were fun to date--I didn't! I think those with BPD can wreak havoc with the most stable of people (although the stable generally avoid these types like the plague). I agree that the best dealings one can have with an untreated BPD is to avoid an intimate relationship, if possible. That, however, is difficult if the BPD is a mother, father, or family member.
I know this is an older post, but I am a professional, and borderline is one of the most OVERdiagnosed disorders, in my experience. I think people just don't advertise the fact that they have been diagnosed with borderline. Or like you suggest, they are celebrated for their characters, rather than being diagnosed as "ill". That and the fact that a borderline's behaviour is more a problem for others than for themselves, so they may not seek help. But, in an acute care psychiatric setting, I'd say at least 75% of patients are diagnosed with borderline.
