The lies don't stop for this place. In one interview, Smid said they don't force anyone to stay, that kids in this program are free to leave if they so choose. However, in one of his recent interviews, he also admitted that kids are brought there against their will, that it's up to the parents of the child to decide.
To the Christian readers out there, I urge you to do as everyone in opposition to this program has done: look past the issues of religion and look to the program itself. Take out all passages referring to Jesus Christ, to religion (like The Fly did below with another group) and what you are left with must disturb you.
It stands to reason, folks: if you're straight, you didn't ask to be born heterosexual. But you were. Being gay is no different.
The program claims to be based on a 12-step program. I have been to a couple of meetings of a 12-step program in my life, and one of the things they harped on in those meetings: when I start trying to control the outcome of things, I'm playing God. When I play God by trying to be in control of the results, that is when I fail.
The reason people seek out 12-step programs is simple: they have a disease. Being gay is not a disease any more than being white and being male is (though some might argue it kinda sucks). I didn't ask for it to be like this, but that's the way it is and I'm learning how to deal with it.
Stop letting these phonies turn your children into hypochondriacs.
On a lighter note....did you see the TV? The Catholic Archbishop came on channel 5 tonight talking about loving gay people...without the rules.
Hopefully tomorrow's press conference will be explosive. In the best of ways.

As I was re-reading that press release this morning, I missed a BIG pink elephant in the room:
"Local ministry calls for open-mindedness and tolerance"
Hang on a second, here. So, now you mean to tell me you're a "ministry" yet you're also, mysteriously in the same breath, an "international recovery treatment center" providing "theraputic intervention"??? Are you a ministry or a rehab center, folks?
As much as you'd like to sneak the rehab part in the back door, it appears that, to you, Jesus Christ is guarding both entrances and the medical community in Memphis should be down-right outraged.
Jeez, can't a Christian brainwash a kid in peace around here? I thought this was the Bible Belt, for Pete's sake! What's the matter with you people, don't you believe in the freedom of religion to do whatever the hell is wants?
The quote about tolerance and understanding reminds me of a story I read yesterday, about the House defeat of a medical marijuana amendment to a bill. The White House fought the amendment and actually stated that the House shouldn't try to circumvent the rulings of the Supreme Court on this issue.
Yeah. The people in the White House are amazing. It's takes years of Bene Gesserit Prana Bindu training to say that with a straight face.
