I read the portions highlighted on your source; and the Memorandum is very well reasoned and grounded in well-established principles of federal constitutional law.
I presume Obama read something potentially high-profile like this and thought the same, or it wouldn't have been filed. But we're just a couple of lawyers.
Get someone like Jeanne Richardson to file a bill next year making pre-approved hospital visitation an optional part of TN's advance directive forms.
I thought Aravosis' commentary was way over the top. It's like he was taking it personally that the administration didn't just say, "Aw, screw what Congress says."
Ok, you guys just don't get it... this is another example of how liberal Democrats have to principles, or at least, they do not stand up for them. Obama PROMISED gay voters he would be a "fierce" advocate for gay rights and would work to REPEAL DOMA and DADT, and instead, his administration, so far, has done NOTHING, but DEFEND the anti-gay laws he promised to change or repeal!
He is loosing the gay vote/community fast..
Once again the Democrats are going to screw the gay community. .they want our money and votes, thats all..

This is just another example.. as is the phony "health care" reform Obama and the Democrats are pushing.. and we could add in the defense of Bush torture crimes, the continuation of the Bush bailouts of Wall Street and financiers, etc...
There has been NO "CHANGE" IN THIS ELECTION!
Jim, if you want to get rid of DOMA, you've got three options:
1. Repeal it in Congress
2. Challenge it in the courts
3. Change the Constitution
None of those options include "Get the President to just overrule it." If that's how it works, the next Republican president can just change it back.

(1) Our Democratic Congress is doing nothing to repeal DADT or DOMA
(2) The Obama Administration has blocked the latest efforts to challenge DADT and DOMA in the courts..
Obama campaigned to repeal both, but his administration is DEFENDING them. And they are LYING about having to do so..
Obama COULD issue an executive order today to stop discharging gays from the military...
Obama is all talk, no action, and the Democratic Party pumps gay voters for money, but never delivers on anything...
Auto, Jim is right. The administration filed a brief with the courts defending DOMA. He's not asking the president to override it, he's asking the president to file a brief if favor of the court overturning it - like he promised to do.
This whole thing is being blown all out of proportion. The guy who filed this brief is some termite holdover from the Bush admin anyway. Do you have any idea how many of those there still are at practically all levels of the bureaucracy? Do you remember that little thing called politicizing the Justice Department?
Sorry, but when you went to vote you didn't just press the "I win" button in the ballot booth. If it was that easy, it would be just as easy for the nest president to undo, and then what have we got, huh? LBJ was specifically selected by Kennedy because of his record on civil rights and look how long it took to get anything done on that front. People were saying the same thing about Kennedy/Johnson then that they're saying about Obama now, but lo and behold, in the end we got the Civil Rights Act. It's been five months. There have been other things going on, like, I don't know, trying to keep the economy from tanking.
In America there's a process by which these things happen and become permanent, and in what's left of Bush's America it's going to take even longer than that. If you think it's useful and helpful to do like Aravosis and get all hysterical over bullshit like "Obama's comparing homosexuality to child molestation and incest," which is just a flat-out goddamn filthy lie, you're welcome to do so, but it's not going to help your blood pressure, and it's not going to make gay marriage happen any faster.
I'll have more on this when I get back from Mississippi. There is a rational, Constitutional explanation for this, based on sound precedent, and it has nothing to do with John Aravosis' disingenuous and ignorant tub-thumping outrage.

Fuck you, Jack. Principles and priorities! When the plane crashes you pull your O2 mask on first then you assist those who need help. That's not selfishness. And if you look around you may notice that we've been crashing for a long time.
Or you could just brag a little louder about how socialist you are and how everybody else sucks. That'll get you everything you want for sure.
