Mike, yelpers like you form the crux of my point. If you want to cry when someone makes these kinds of comparisons you need to be very careful when you make your own. In this case it's not the comparison that I find bothersome--- make all the comparisons you want. It's the stupidity of the comparison. It's in opening lines of the text.
And I typed it slowly so even you can read it.

I simply point out that you walk the very road you decry in Beck. If you want to argue degree, that's your prerogative, but the point remains.

Mike is arguing that it is just as wrong to say that Al Gore is as bad as Hitler because he's trying to save the earth from global warming, as it is to compare republicans to Nazies because they advocate unlimited power for the president, subject to now law but his own, to include torture and indefinite detention without trial for American citizens, and the silencing of all debate contrary to these principles.
Stop global warming.
Replace American Democracy with police state.
Which of these, I ask, is more representative of actual Nazism? Which is closer to the historical model?
It is crazy to compare Gore to Hitler.
It is not crazy to compare Bush to Hitler. It's crazy not to compare Bush to Hitler - no matter what the standards of reasonable argument might say. Those standards were written before we had George W. Bush to contend with.
Back when Hitler was around, people were probably saying, "No, you go too far when you compare him to Napoleon - he is nothing like Napoleon." And it was true, except for that whole plunging Europe into years of horrible wars and the deaths of millions thing, they were nothing alike.
To argue that Hitler and Nazi comparisons are off limits is to stifle reasonable debate. If the comparisons are valid, they should be made, no matter how much they fluster our professional fainters and guardians of polite debate. When the comparisons are not valid, they should be invalidated through argument. Not through some ridiculous pre-Bush ban on Nazi comparisons.
