Indeed, Peter, interesting post. I try to have two feet in the traditional media world and one arm in the casual source world. I hope it works.
If people only took the casual sources as their information in this instance... they'd get an understandably one-sided view. Most people in the crowd had no idea what police were up to. They saw the police as being violent and harassing them. Police say they were trying to arrest ONE person: and then the whole crowd went nutso. So they had to take action to protect themselves, and the guy being arrested.
Who knows what's the truth... but certainly if you only relied on the crowd-sourcing info, you'd have as an accurate picture as if you went to a prison and asked all the murderers what happened to their victims.

Great post, Peter.
It's worth noting that Jason DeRusha, who is in the traditional media business, was the first person to get in touch with the police for a statement. That's something I've yet to see from more casual sources.

I think that's always better, isn't it...for traditional media companies are important, but still they may be under pressure form government etc.
But the governenment etc canNOT force me or you from twittering, blogging etc
