He must have had approximately the same status as the people jailed in Guantanamo. Not a soldier, but working with the army and therefore enemy combatant, or some similar sort of logical treatment of the situation.

I was once unemployed for a while and at the time I also described myself as a ‘professional civilian’. If only I had known the dangers to which I was exposing myself.

My favoutite euphemism is 'contractor'.
Whenever I hear of US 'contractors' dying in Iraq, I always wonder how much a plumber or plasterer can hope to earn per hour rebuilding Iraq's infrastructure.
As much as a mercenary I perhaps?
