Well, Benedict recently said Christianity was a blend of the teachings of Jesus refined through neoplatonism (though I would define it more as Paulianity with a heavy dose of Old Testament fire & brimstone). Nevertheless, attempts to rewrite what is supposed to be taken on faith is inherently self-contradictory. Or perhaps god is always up for improvement. As you note, the improvements do tend to favor a certain element in society over others.
