Ah yes; the only line in the Lord's Prayer which translates neither as grovel grovel nor as gimme gimme, and whose insincerity is therefore manifest.

The poor need to be taught responsibility so we withhold money while bankers are given billions for the same lesson? The human race will end itself by cognitive dissonance alone.

Well, from across the pond, perhaps you might conside the stories from PLymouth and Jamestown colonies early 1600's. "Those that do not work will not eat." is the lesson. It's the most Christian and productive approach to society ever and the USA suffers each time it forgets.

And in which verses of which Gospel does Christ advocate starving the idle?

I think it comes right after the bit about the birds of the air and the lilies in the field: those lazy bastards, let's teach them a lesson and mow them down. Not often quoted, mind you, but certainly followed in spirit.

Well Philip since you asked, my quotation is from Capt John Smith who in turn quoted Paul from II Thessalonians Chapter 3. And I must admit Madame though I shall not quote a verse, I'm fairly sure that somewhere in scripture it does say that in the end each man/woman will tend his/her own tree and eat the fruits of his/her own labors. This does mean that one who doesn't work or at least pick up the fruit will in fact starve.
Christian charity (as well as the kind that gets publicity and a tax write off) are both widely practiced here - yet for those who CANNOT help themselves. I quite strongly resent those who WILL NOT help themselves. I must have missed the point at which the Berlin wall was enlarged and expanded to keep out the throngs wanting get into the Eastern Block to share in the prosperity of the communist world.
As a wall street banker type recently said (I guess a modern day version of The Emperor has no Clothes) that everyone knew the derivatives and loan practices were non-sense but know one said so as they did not understand exactly why and did not want to be thought stupid by those who did(understand). This of course turns out to be no one.

So the bit about living like birds or lilies was a mistake, then. Jolly charitable of the Tarsus Inquisitor to correct the Saviour's errors.

Well you'd likely defeat me in battle on the fields of euphemization and nicknamery if not brevity though not without a fight; at least on the first two.
