In light of this debate, I've been asked if the Chinese community in the U.K. ever want to implement their own systems and laws.
"Communism?" I say. "No, we don't want to import that here."
As for Chinese traditions -- even politically incorrect ones like "tithes" paid from grown children to their elderly parents, or dowries -- these are done by Chinese in the West, but always privately.
Back in Hong Kong, I (and many other Hong Kongers) have been accused of being "judgmental" about China. To which I respond that I am happy to be judgmental that a free, worldly affluent place is better than a totalitarian state with a large number of rural poor. If we don't make these judgments, then countries like China would never improve (which it is).
It's sad when political correctness takes such a hold that nobody has the guts to show good judgment about anything.
