Thanks for pointing this out. I had missed this and was delighted to read about the Italian defense secretary Ignazio La Russa's launching into a "furious monologue in defense of crucifixes" on Italian television, in which he ended up denouncing not only the European Court of Human Rights but also the UN and "international organisations" (they "mean nothing!").
Unfortunately, he seems to have also said that those who are against crucifixes "can die", which wasn't so humorous since Soile Lautsi has been receiving lots of threats.

Then France could use the guillotine, Spain the rack, Germany the oven, and Britain the hang, draw & quarter. As Bill Hicks used to say, should Jesus come back, do you think he'd want to see a bunch of crosses?

England, Georgia and Germany all use the cross as symbols of national identity as well (no doubt one can find others - er...such as Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland). What now?

Ah, but none of them use the crucifix. The English cross has long horizontal arms, the German one has arms of equal length and the Georgian flag uses both kinds. The Scandinavian crosses do have the proportions of crucifixes but in a horizontal rather than a vertical position, doubtless reflecting the excessive degree of sex education which is practised in those countries.
