Plato's Playground

Gravatar I think you're nit pikky.

Some Christians accept much of the Bible as metaphor and analogy. I don't believe scientific theories such as evolution, string theory or anthropic cosmological principle present a problem for the theist.

Also, if you're going to accept God as an immaterial being then there is no moment of His "creation." God "IS." And maybe there were other universes before this one, spreading out then rubber banding back to start again. Who knows?

I think it is the people with a very immature faith who have difficulty reconciling faith with science. I guess the problem isn't necessarily with faith, but with trying to use faith to explain what can be explained with empirical evidence. Of trying to replace science with faith. The proper thing for faith to be applied to is not science, but rather ethics, morality, culture, and consciousness. And I would like to see science do more with consciousness; then we might get somewhere.

Look, if you spend sixteen hours a day in prayer or meditation you're going to experience a radical transformation in consciousness. If there is no God, why did we evolve this way? Why do all humans across cultural boundaries crave ritual, liturgy, prayer and meditation? There is no question that these practices lead to greater awareness and more compassion.

I don't know. Whatever.

Gravatar I hope we'll be able to explore all of these questions further as I continue.

Thanks for your comments.

Gravatar Well written piece. Thought you might like to see what I've written on the Pelasgian creation myth (or the next one, known as a Philosophical one).

Gravatar That's nice Michael.

As far as how it relates to the Bible, I would say that while we today can look at the Pentateuch as poetry, and a route to insight into how people find themselves in the world, to the scribes who wrote it down - and unfortunately to a lot of people today - it was or is literally true.

As I continue with this project, I hope to be able to balance both perspectives.
