Re theists vs rationalists- My statement. "Religion is (has been) both the most dangerous yet potentially the most healing force on the planet."* The choice is ours to make.

Gravatar Cervantes,

I recently found this blog through the other site you host, "Stayin' Alive." As a fellow public health person, I appreciate your posts on that site.

As a person with a faith in God, the topic of this site also intrigues me. Frankly though, thinking that anything a person of faith says on this site will be truly respected is a little like watching Bush give a speech--his words sound good, but they come off very insincere.

Here's hoping for real dialogue.

Gravatar nc, that's the whole idea. I'll certainly respect what you have to say, and as a matter of fact, we've been looking for people to post from the faith-based side of the divide. But we haven't had any luck recruiting people.

Frankly, it's religious people who seem to be unwilling to engage in real dialogue, not humanists. Just so you know.

Gravatar Cervantes,

Here is what I know. There are too many Al Frankens, too many Rush Limbaughs. Red and blue doesn't work. Black and white is too simple.

The events of this world and the people who live in it are too complex for pat answers, crass generalizations, and thoughtless dogma. Talk show hosts may get away with simplistic and explosive comments, but those discussions aren't bringing anyone together or solving societal issues--they merely contribute to the problems.

If James Surowiecki ("The Wisdom of Crowds") is correct, the bringing together of people with diverse perspectives can actually lead to better outcomes than issues/problems solved by homogenous groups.

This world is in need of such people and their solutions. Simple won't cut it.

Gravatar Sure nc. Of course, being open minded, respectful, and listening to diverse perspectives does not mean that you shouldn't have your own beliefs. I make mine clear because otherwise, you would not be able to engage with me honestly and vice versa.
