This is the main reason why I am so in favor of high stakes testing in order for a student to get a diploma. In Arizona you have to pass TENTH grade level of reading, writing and math by the time you graduate in order to get your high school diploma. The way I look at it, if you cannot pass 10th grade curriculum of the basics, you really do not deserve a diploma or otherwise, what does it really stand for.
So if we can get to the point where a high school diploma means something, hopefull that will transfer up and it will weed out those students in college who do not have clue about basic academics.
