I lay out my policy at the beginning of the year: If I catch you cheating, you get three things - a zero on the assignment, a phone call home, and a referral (for documentation). I also give them a handout defining cheating. After an incident this year (7 students thought I wouldn't notice they turned in identical reading journals), I will require parent signatures on the cheating policy next year. I had a parent try to argue that his son sending a copy of his paper to another student over Myspace wasn't cheating . . . "He was just showing her what he'd done!" Yeah, and she turned it in verbatim.
Worst cheaters......AP students. We have just really began the "AP Culture" at our school and in my first year as a teacher I've heard nothing but complaints from AP teachers that these "best of the best" students are cheating like mad. I end up assigning essays that require critical thinking in my CompGov class, and that avoids a lot of cheating.
My dear Polski3, I confess to having cheated--once, in high school, on a geometry test--and I have been filled with remorse ever since. It's hard to live with that shadow hanging over my life.
What disgusts me is that cheating is tolerated and even expected to get ahead. When leaders and sports teams and athletes and even ministers cheat with impunity, it just makes me tired.
I have the cheating discussion at least weekly with my students. Cheating seems to be just another way to get things done. As Ms. C says its accepted almost as if its just another part of our culture. A story: I mentioned to a parent that I caught her son cheating. I explained a situation not unlike the one you outline in your post. The parent thought I was kidding that I thought that what the student was doing was cheating. To her -and I'm sure the the student- copying the HW was just another way to complete the assignment, it had nothing to do with lying or cheating.

Children are discounted by adults in society. This is one of the most bitter, painful ironies the gods employ, for people consciously turn their back on and lose their opportunity to ascend::::
Religions teach that old people to go to heaven when they die. They don't. Old people are reincarnated. It's the children who go to heaven, those who have a chance at immortality.
The wisdom the gods impart to children, either through their innocence/purity or religious-based educational pursuits are the gods sharing the truth with their most favored people::::It's the children whom the gods teach the right way for it is the children who have a chance. For example, they teach children to have faith, for understanding the god's geographical clues hurts people by illustrating negative things, opening the door for the god's to employ deceptive tactics.
Old people don't go to heaven. Old people must come back because of the mistakes they've made throughout their lives. It's the children who have the opportunity to go to "heaven". They must behave apprioriately, think correctly and be genuinely god-fearing. Their innocence and lack of desensitization ensures they have a real opportunity to achieve this goal.
