Polski - you and the other parents in question take this fight as far as the school board. If the homeschoolers get to go, then your son should get the same accomodations. I am tired of everyone else getting something and the smart, or even average, kids getting the shaft. Fight the good fight and get him across the street because him sitting with headphones while the other teacher is teaching something entirely different does not meet his needs. That is your battle cry: this does not meet his needs. If there is a precedent for this, I don't see how they can refuse. Get a mediator. They let 8th graders in my daughters' school go to the high school to do the very same thing; they have even let the 7th graders do so. Go for it.

Our eighth grades who have taken Alg 1 in 7th grade are dropped off at the high school first hour and bussed to middle school after that. Our 6th graders can be recommended for PreAlg in 6th grade (before school).
Do not let you son take Geometry "by headphone". Bright kids are notorious at teaching themselves incorrectly and it takes 10 times as long to unteach them!! You wife can probably attest to that.

How did this resolve? I'm curious because my daughter (starting 11th grade) is frustrated because she wanted to take Calculus next year. I took it in High School, but that was years ago when it was a big flunk-out course.

I'm always amazed when we in education find reasons *not* to let a student move ahead.
Perhaps it's easier on the adults that way.
