I suspect he may be washed-up, I really don't think he can be compared to Cleese and Cook. They would never have put in such a performance at a major event.
Only time will tell though.

It wasn't that bad!!
I think he has done enough now to be compared to Rowan Atkinson, John Cleese, even Lenny Henry

I think the danger here is falling into the trap of making an early judgement on someone's talent against giants of comedy with timeless appeal.
Rather like the annual event where some one-hit-wonder gets compared to the Beatles.
Time, or rather history will tell if Gervais has that quality. Personally I'm sceptical as I was unable to crack a smile through his set, he could bounce back, Cook and Hancock had their lacklustre years.

Ricky Gervais was about the best bit of this otherwise cringeworthy event. His d libbing was amusing, irreverant almost. His confidence never dropped.
He's a funny guy.

I agree. Elton John, Duran Duran, Jason Donovan, Joseph and his tedious Dreamcoat....God it was awful.

Sure, your'e right - only time will tell how good he is. But he has now completed two series of the Office and two series of the Extras - all excellent.

I still haven't got around to watching Extras... whenever I've seen him in interviews, he always has that David Brent character - I don't think he has to change all that much
I don't know - it looked like he was dying on stage, but he was dying in character, if that makes sense... which is kind of what made it funny.

Ricky Gervais's character in The Office was an incredible mirror image of my brother in law. So much so that my wife couldn't watch the programme. She couldn't stand being around Kevin in real life and having him on the screen was almost as bad. Rickie even looks like him, only more handsome.

A less handsome version of David Brent?
hardly a ringing endorsement

That could be a good insult, "You remind me of David Brent, but without the sex appeal"... pretty nasty

The Mirror cannot be taken seriously by anyone. They love slagging people off - Ricky Gervais is the funniest man alive, along with Stephen Merchant. Anyone who says he isn't is either jealous of his success or simply doesn't "get it". And I agree with Colin- he's handsome...
