So you're saying that people who can't afford Foxtel shouldn't have the option to view non-commercial programming? Or perhaps SBS and the ABC should be sold off (like Telstra) to private enterprise which has a greater concern in turning a profit rather than providing the service these channels were intially established to deliver?

I originlly thought so when I was in Australia because let's face it, apart from the occasional movies, who'd watch it? But now I live over here, if I were in Oz on a visit, I'd probably watch it.

Why on earth should TV be free? Even food and water costs money. Why should TV be different?

You're showing a wonderfully naive understanding of capitalism. Private TV providers deliver such a good service precisely because they deliver better services. That's the beauty of capitalism.

I like watching the SBS and ABC news, music, documentary and comedy shows. Eash to their own in a free country. It's not just a question of only delivering popular shows. If it's about delivering the lowest common demoninator in free-to-air then we'll end up with more fluff shite like ACA, Today Tonight, WW2BAMillionaire, Deal or No Deal, the Mint, etc. It is in the countries interest to educate the public and make them aware of material they may not otherwise see. If the government wanted to outsource this function this but retain it's say then that would be ok but then it's just a matter of giving the same amount of money to private enterprise to spend on the same thing... Then again if you are happy to subsidise a Foxtel subscription for the rest of my life with your tax then pay away.
