Gravatar one really doesn't need a machine to make compost. some black plastic, some wooden stakes (which you can steal easily from campaign signs right now) and some good old fashioned kitchen scraps will do the trick. after that, garden trimmings, coffee grounds, all that good stuff which has been going down the disposal will give you good compost.

i have a full on organically active heap.

and dogs love it too!

Gravatar on the giving end of things, i suggest doctors without borders. those guys are fearless and absolutely uncorruptable. dr. john is a friend of mine for the last thirty years. during the winter he rents my san diego place. he's there to do face lifts and tummy tucks, all that elective stuff. he saves his money and spends six months out of the year going to war zones. he loves to go into the shittiest shitholes in the world where he will do free reconstructive surgeries on folks who have been caught up in the meat grinders of war. he was in mosul and al-anbar for four years straight until he got put on a "watch" list by DHS. we made t-shirts and threw a party to celebrate. he's going to try and get into burma or china. worst case scenario is he'll go back to africa to help folks who have stepped on land mines or stuff like that.

his rent has not been raised since 1984.

Gravatar Can I mail him a cookie? I'd like to bake him a thank-you letter.

Gravatar he's leaving this week for singapore to try and get into burma or china. he is usually back in september and cookie grams will be welcomed.

ice cream!

Gravatar I'm getting out of the black hole of medical transcription and into something that feels kinder to my soul. It's going to be slow, but I'm leaping. While I know the work I have done for the VA is important, and there will still be a need for it when I go, it's a little hard on my heart.

I start today into uncharted waters as an office monkey for a knitting designer. She makes patterns I lust for. Suddenly, I will have free access to the patterns, and discount yarns.

Excuse me, but I have to mop up my drooled happiness now.

Gravatar Sweetie, I'm so happy for you! Yay!

(running in happy circles, with occasional leaping)

Gravatar After having to deal with mousies in my basement celotex ceiling (and having no assurance that some aren't still there, I'm concerned about anything that's going to attract vermin...that's the one reason I haven't bought a composter. I think about it, though, every time I cut the stems out of the swiss chard. Of course I could just toss it in the bushes in the backyard for the bunnies, but would they find them? And will they care about the sand?
