You know what I love about Riverside? That I never lived there. Oh, sure, I worked in Moreno Valley once, substitute teaching for the spawn of the nouveau riche. I skirted the blight of Riverside for the basso loco of Moreno Valley; my only saving grace is that I avoided Norco all together (after a near-miss while searching for student housing).
In all my decades of tortoise research, I have never come across evidence of Mennonite tortoise wrangling. I sense a new avenue of investigation....
Nouveau riche in MoVal? Somebody's been away for too long. Now it's more nouveau ghetteau than anything else.
Really? Wow, I guess David Sedaris won't be visiting on his way through, then, eh? Tell me, though, does Fontana still smell of tuna?
I don't get up to Fontana much, but from my last stop through, I would say it's more of a piquant eau d'exhaust these days. Norco still smells like cowshit, though. Which is weird because all the dairy farms left 10 years ago. I guess tradition is tradition.
I sense a new atlas in the making: Smells of California. Add a few wine tasting type phrases like, "A robust essense of bovinity" for NorCo, while Eureka can be described as "a light overtone of inlet, mixed with an underlying permanence of redwood, occassionally overpowered with the robust awareness of Pulp Plant."
Include some pretty pictures of freeway overramps, wildflowers, and oil fields,add some scratch-n-sniff panels, and we have coffee table literature. I'll make the maps, you do the hard work.
Who needs McSweeney's? (which, by the way, I had never heard of before you mentioned it. Their loss, Pal)
is the murk of southern california better or worse than the Rust Belt? or is it like comparing rotten apples to rotten oranges?

Toi: Are you talking about smell when you say murk? That's a new connotation for me, but then, I don't actually own a thesaurus. And to your question, I've been to Detroit and CA wins, at least in terms of variety of funk(s).
