Gravatar They all believe in one God, and they all describe him pretty much the same. That's the big issue, for me, anyway. And they all kinda agree on the basics. The rest is details to which people, throughout the millenia, have gotten quite attached.

these guys persist in blowing themselves up against Jews and Christians

Alright, man, this was really arrogant, and I think quite out of line.

1. "These guys" -- you mean Muslims? All 0.9-1.4 billion of them worldwide? That's a broad brush. I'm sure all my Muslim friends and ex-students really enjoy being painted as terrorists.

2. The vast vast majority of the time, the conflict is political rather than religious. Why is bin Laden pissed? Because the US has permanent bases in Saudi Arabia, and Israel, which contains Muslim (and Christian) holy sites, was declared a Jewish state. These have religious issues, yes, but they're overwhelmingly a product of political decisions.

3. Ever hear of the Crusades? Seems kinda similar, except a whole lot bigger, and lasted on and off for centuries. Oh, and it was Christians specifically doing the killing.

So... if you could just cool the hatred for a bit... that'd be great. Thanks a bunch.

Gravatar The defence of libel is the truth.

Where exactly is my hatred? All the material I provide and this is what you choose to comment on? If I remove that poorly chosen glib remark would that make it ok?

Seriously, if you read the Coptotic priest quoted from MERMI in my earlier article you find that true ISLAM calls for the murder of Christians. Bin Laden is not "pissed"-he is just following through with his percieved calling from a highly sociopathic mind set. The US influence and presence in the middle east is a pretext for his actions. If we weren't there he would still target the Western world because he thinks his religion tells him to.

Ask your Muslim friends if the selections from the Koran I have quoted here are true. Ask them if the Copotic priest is telling the truth.

Where in these words did I fail to tell the truth?

Allah only forgives once, Mormons think they are going to be God if they act right and have enough kids, and the Jewish peoples are following the old law ignoring the fufilment of prophecy from their own texts in Jesus.

Am I harsh? Well, maybe better to call it blunt than harsh. The truth is sometimes hard to swallow, so many refuse to do it. That doesn't make it less true, it just means that the someone who rejects the truth loses out.

Gravatar BTW- this was your question:
"Y'know... I've read a nice chunk of the Koran, and have also read a nice chunk of the Bible... and they sorta seem to say the same general things. They both believe in one God; one believes Jesus is the second part of the Trinity, the other's a little more skeptical, but still sees this carpenter as a pretty holy kind of guy..."

So I gave you my 2 part answer. You issued the question of the veracity of one over the other so I thought I would throughly answer your question.

Gravatar Why am I not hung up on what religion someone chooses? Shit, man, the only people I have a problem with are evangelical Christians -- and only a tiny fraction of them who happen to be running the White House and, in effect, the world.

You used to have a fine country down there, but now it's fucked. I used to get all worked-up about it, but now all I can really do is hope you don't blow this planet to smithereens before 2008. Shoot, after 9/11, the entire world -- including us bleeding-heart liberals -- was on your side. Now, curiously, save for the British government, the House of Saud, and Ariel Sharon, the ol' international rep is in tatters.

Could it be because of the Crusadelike rampage the Bush cadre is parading across the planet? Think it might be related to that somehow?

I should've been suspicious in spring of 2001 when there was all that hubbub about the US government cutting USAID money to groups abroad that provided abortions, which led to massive contraceptive shortages in those countries. Oh, how little of a drop in the bucket that was.

Could it be because the US government is foisting a very specific set of Christian values, a particular political system, a consumptive way of life, gallons of Coca-Cola, and NBA basketball down the throats of everyone else in the world (save North Korea, but give that time)? If it looks like imperialism, feels like imperialism, and smells like imperialism... it's imperialism.

Anyway... that's all.

Gravatar Interesting that everyone but "evangelical Christians" is okay. This is a typical anti-Christian view; you have the right to believe anything, except a Bible-based Christian world view.

"... men loved the darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil." (John 3:19)
