Wait a minute - I thought invading Iraqnam was supposed to secure us a glorious future with abundant oil?

So why are we now in ugly times, despite five years of super-competent governance by former oil executives(!), hmmm? Could it be that repuggery is just a complete and utter failure?

We report, you decide.

Gravatar Hey Stalin, I guess that whole "war for oil" thing didn't work out so well.

But back to the point of Possum's post, getting rid of the Federal gasoline taxes, even temporarily, will knock the price down to affordable. That is the only thing that can provide immediate relief for us. Once that is done, then the Feds should start doing all the things they should have been doing for the last 30 years, i.e. build new refineries, repeal prohibitions against domestic drilling, etc.

Given a choice between having a wind farm or the Trans-Texas Corridor in my backyard, I'd gladly take the windfarm. Sadly, I don't appear to have that choice.

I have a sample letter regarding repeal of the gasoline taxes that can be copied and pasted on my blog.

Gravatar Yeehaw cowgirl. Teach that yankee a thing or two.

As for you Sharkey, if we really were a dominiating colonizing empire builder we would have total control of the Iraqi oil and would be stealing it for ourselves.

I guess Bush really isn't out to do the "Hitler version of piece" (as opposed to peace).

Gravatar Dave,

All empires have an end. It's usually when they are overstretched trying to go after one last booty. Perhaps Iraq is America's rubicon.

Gravatar Heh. This yankee ain't convinced, and here's why: Knocking down the federal gas tax is the Democratic proposal; problem is, that creates another revenue hole, which we're willing to close by cutting the outrageous subsidies to the oil companies and taxing their extortionate profits, while the Rs insist on giving more taxpayer money to Exxon and Co. Just another example of Rs being too incompetent to govern, but hey. It all depends, I guess, on what the meaning of 'affordable' is.

Going on, I seem to recall, again, that we were told prior to the war that it would lower prices - but then again, we have been told many things that didn't happen, so why bother listing them all?

The larger question is this: Rs have basically owned our government for a generation. So why are we in this hole in the first place? And why are R-friendly companies making money hand over fist while the rest of us struggle to fill our gas tanks? And why does anybody still pretend that Rs have an answer not just to the energy crisis, but to anything at all?

It's a little late now to be casting around for solutions to a problem you pretended for twenty years did not exist. You guys have failed to lead, so now it's time for you to just get out of the way.

Gravatar Hmmm... 10 years of Republican control versus 40 years of Democrat control albeit with a couple of good Republican Presidents... oh wait and a Democrat president during the first 4 years of that "Republican" control...

Revising history here Sharkey? (dripping sarcasmYeah, it's all the Republicans fault.

Gravatar You know Sharkey, I wonder if blocking the exploration and development of new resources by democrats has anything to do with this mess we are in.

I wonder if preventing the building of new refineries and nuclear power plants has anything to do with our energy crisis.

Of course, those can't be the fault of Democrats who were just trying to save the environment? You can't have it both ways Sharkey.

Gravatar Yes, perish the thought that the Rs could ever be to blame for everything. No matter how much power they have, no matter how badly and obviously they eff up, it's always someone else's fault.

So why should people vote for you, Dave? Seems you can't do anything right, so things can only get better with the adults back in charge.

Gravatar Who on the left would be your model for a mature adult? Just curious.
