"ARENA, the party that was, notoriously, the party of the death squads during the 1980s civil war"
Fair.
Nonetheless, may I suggest, for balance, the use, from time to time, of:
"FMLN, the party of the former guerilla that was notorious for its kidnappings, extorsions, robberies, and terrorist bombings of public and private property during the 1970s and 1980s"
Just sayin'.

Anonimo, well, of course after Ellacurķa Proceso wouldn't be the same. But I'll admit I haven't really been following it so closely. So an interesting observation.
Xavi, actually I'd be happy to call the FMLN a former terrorist organization. But you and I might well differ as to what we meant by that. In any case, Villalobos's alliance with ARENA was traumatic at precisely the point that the FMLN was trying to reposition themselves while maintaining some of their momentum from a war in which they remained undefeated.
But the Frente have hitherto underperformed as a political party. For interesting reasons, i think. More on this anon, perhaps.
