Gravatar DO NOT read anything into the fact that his character is agnostic y'all! In Everquest some classes or races are agnostic, some have no choice in the matter, like Vah Shir. (Which I played, as a rogue and a beastlord.)

http://www.eqcircle.com/vahshir/...hshir/ index.htm

Given the state of events in the Everquest universe when I quit playing, I can see how he wouldn't want to worship the God of War, even as a warrior. He and his sons plotted to destroy mortals, and take over the realms for themselves. They blew up the moon, which was the Vah Shir's home, killed off all the Vah Shir, in EQ2 all you get to play is ugly, puny little Kerrans! (Which Vah Shir evolved from.) It isn't so in Everquest, but in Everquest 2 it is. All the Gods and Goddesses turned their backs on Norrath though, because mortals dared to go into the realms of the Gods and slay them.) Read about the Gods of Everquest here to see what I mean. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rallos_Zek

Gravatar Adding, EQ1 has actually lost players steadily over the past couple of years. Many went to Worlds of Warcraft, got bored, and some came to Guild Wars. Some just went straight from not playing Everquest to Guild Wars after hearing about how childish the WoW players in general can be. A few gave up EQ1 for EQ2, but not as many as Sony had hoped.

Sony also lost customers (like me) over the whole DRM fiasco a while back. ("Most people don't even know what a root kit is, so why worry" to paraphrase a Sony higher up.) Also, Sony has increased the subscription rate a LOT, and customer service and Quality Control rather sucked.

Guild Wars is *MUCH* better with customer service, and even WoW would rather ban thousands upon thousands of cheating accounts than let them stay in the game to wreck it. (Good for them, says I!) Cheating by buying currency or honor shreds the in game economy by devaluing things, just as overfarming can. Other things can make prices go sky high, and the common player without scads of RL money to buy pixels suffers, and their character stagnates. WoW and Guild Wars pretty much sees to it that this doesn't happen.

Also, before you judge someone who spends years playing an MMORPG, take into account the idea that on disability especially you don't have a lot of money for things like movies or expensive hobbies, so simple things like computer games that are able to be played over and over again are good investments. (And you can set up your payment schedule so you pay every 3 months, and set aside money each month.) This is why I play computer games myself. It's a valid hobby, and only crosses over into addiction territory if it interferes with your everyday life. (Which it doesn't for me.)

I also do art to a small degree, but not as much as I'd like. Paints and canvas are expensive, so atm I just use beads and wire to make three dimensional light catching sculptures and mobiles as well as jewelry. (Wal-Mart beads at that, which are decent but not the high quality beads that make me drool and whimper.)

Gravatar Adding: Sony, of course hoped people would continue to pay to play EQ1, as well as taking up EQ2, but that didn't really happen.

Gravatar Drat! I wish I could edit my comments. Guild Wars is *NOT* pay to play for the record. This is one reason why I play it now. It's freed up some money to be put aside for other things.

Gravatar http://www.ktvb.com/news/ localne...a.1592ca0f.html

Above is a link that shows a picture of Brent High.

Gravatar Kat, you might want to read the book Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.

Gravatar A couple of points.

1. If this is the same person, then the fact that he was until very recently playing EQ1 can lend some insight into his personality. Two years ago three new MMORPG's (WOW, Guild Wars and EQ2) were released.

All three of these were technologically superior to EQ1 and as a result dug deeply into EQ1's subscription base http://www.mmogchart.com/. It is reasonable to say that those who stuck it out with EQ1 did so because of their attachment to their characters.

Considering that, Brent High had lost two significant long term relationships (12 years and 7 years) recently. I'm sure that would take a toll on anyone's psyche.

2. In the midst of his postings is what I believe will be the most telling predictor of what was coming. Brent mentioned that he had ended a 12 year relationship with his girlfriend because she wouldn't give up illegal drugs. When all is said and done with this case I believe that we will find that the victims will have stronger ties to the drug trade (Meth?) than they will have to online gaming.

Gravatar M, I am in flow most consistently when working with beads, or dancing/doing housework to music. When I was more fit, I could get in the flow while running, but I am not in cross country shape now. I play Guild Wars to be able to interact with friends in other states, and because there really isn't much else to do in this town. I *can* reach flow while playing it, but not as easily as I can while dancing. (I set things to rhythmn unconciously, so if I play music and sweep it's just an extension of that. I'm told that's a "musical learner"?)

Gravatar Before I get another "This has nothing to do with online gaming" comment, would you ALL please put down your swords and shields and actually read what I wrote?

"That the man played online games was immaterial to me. If I was looking at profiles for the same Brent High sitting in the Canyon County Jail charged with a gruesome double murder, I did wonder why he had so much time to play the games..."

And after that I went into what I thought was most telling -- that he was on disability, and I'd lay bets for a mental illness.

In fact, if you really read what I wrote, instead of reflexively feeling the need to defend people who play MMORPGs online, you will see that I pose the idea that gaming actually kept this guy stable. Being mentally ill and his relationship breaking up were likely what led to this crime.

People, I know it's the Web, and we ALL skim. But if you're going to take the extra step and comment, please do my blood pressure a favor and actually digest what I wrote. I made it pretty clear this time that I wasn't blaming gaming.

Stop defending MMORPGs and those who play them to me, because that's the gist of some of these comments so far, like BillG's. I'm not attacking you. I'm just telling part of the story.

If anything, Brent High might have been better off if he'd hung onto his WoW character through this upheaval in his life.

Steve

Gravatar i was about to come to your defense, steve.. gamers can get testy, but you clearly weren't making desparaging remarks abuot online gaming.

Gravatar I'll go with mental illness as his disability. I AM curious if one of the two men who were murdered was his brother, or perhaps friends of his brother.

Gravatar I agree, Steve - it is sad and interesting to me that he abandoned his online character.

It could have been a sign of upcoming psychotic break like when people who commit suicide give away their possessions - though he was selling, not giving. Or perhaps it was a sign that he was losing the battle between good and evil that was raging inside of him every day. Maybe it was even an atempt to distance himself from the "deathmaker" thoughts in his head. I wish i knew more about his character and how he played the game. Was Brentos more Jeckyl or Hyde?

Or perhaps he simply lost interest but without the comfort, repetition, and plain ol' time-consumption of his former pastime, he was left with too much time and energy and the thoughts in his head won.

Gravatar Steve, I wasn't saying *you* were making disparging remarks at all. Just I know how people that don't game can be is all. I wanted to make a "pre-emptive strike" and fight a bit of potential ignorance from your readers. That really is it. I am sorry if I irritated you Steve, it wasn't my intent at all. (To be fair, you've not had to face the scorn and misunderstandings that can be heaped each time there is an incident in the news dealing with an avid gamer either.)

Gravatar hollyRocks, warriors in EQ are meant to take a lot of damage, they are "tanks". They don't deal as much damage per second as wizards, mages, rogues, beastlords etc. do. (Those other classes can't take much of a beating though, especially wizards and mages.) Their purpose is to keep the mob the raid is fighing angry at them (keep aggro) so others don't get killed. A full raid is 72 people if I recall correctly, six people per group. (This will tell you how powerful raid mobs are, some boss mobs took half an hour to kill with a full raid last I knew. A raid is typically four hours or more long.) A lot of macho, showy types play EQ warriors, rather like drummers in a band if you see what I mean? I don't know what "class balance" patches have been put in since I quit. I know warriors were up iin arms because they couldn't dish out as much damage as caster classes, and paladins and shadowknights (anti-paladins) were better tanks then they were due to class abilities. I didn't really like the personalities of most of the warriors I knew when I played EQ, too whiny and self absorbed, (Though my room mate assures me I was unfortunate, she says the warriors they knew were normal people, if a little egotistical.) and I don't mean just over game things. It seemed to me that their RL personality was like that too, by the way they conducted themselves in conversations about everyday things.

Gravatar Just wanted to point out that "Brentos Deathmaker" is probably poking fun at the candy Mentos whose tag line is Mentos: the Freshmaker. Not sure it's any help, but you never know. . .

Gravatar Yeah, Steve had the Mento's reference too. I know from experience that some mentally ill people have difficulty seperating their gaming from reality but I don't think the gaming is even a main point of this blog report, guys.

Gravatar I guess I missed that sentence the first time through. Now I feel like a dork. . .

Gravatar Nah,beetlesque,I wouldn't feel like a dork. I can top that-I never would have caught it if it wasn't in the blog. Now that is dorky, lol.

Gravatar For those who want an idea of what an EQ raid is like (sort of) look at these two videos. (This goes for showing how you sort of *have* to give a lot of time in order to get to the "end game" areas and really do the nifty raids and have the REALLY nice gear.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1...h? v=1a3ccppb06g The hardest part of that raid is at about the 2:45 mark. This raid had all the super raiding guilds (a.k.a. uber guilds) crying and rending their hair at first, because they could not beat it, and they needed it to progress to other zones which had really nice loot.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R...h? v=RWf_hhXAalc Battling Xegony, Goddess of Air.

They are compressed down to a few minutes each, but they give a general idea. "Tanks" would be the ones at the feet of the boss mob, hitting them. There is usually one raid member designated the "main tank" whose job it is to keep the mob's attention focused on them. If they die, or lose aggro (or the boss summons more mobs) the secondary tanks step up. The other classes you see close are probably beastlords, monks, rogues or maybe rangers. (Though usually they choose to use ranged combat.) The mounted characters are casters. (Clerics would have hammers, they are healers.)

Gravatar hollyRocks, your mention of:

"It could have been a sign of upcoming psychotic break like when people who commit suicide give away their possessions - though he was selling, not giving."

...echoed what I first thought of when I read this story. However, something that I experienced makes me think the distinction between 'giving' and 'selling' may not matter- one relative of mine who attempted (and thankfully did not succeed!) suicide first sold off his home and some of his possessions, squared away a new place to live, and after closing and after completing the move, he *then* tried to take his life. My relative's actions prior to his meltdown made us all wonder- did he plan all this, or was he instead suffering a broader sort of depression, one that first manifested by the shedding of belongings, and only at the very end culminated in a suicide attempt? It was all so very strange, and difficult to puzzle out, even with lots of therapy afterwards.

It's a little like the chicken and egg dilemma. In this case, I wonder- did Brent destruct because of all these changes in his life, or did he make the changes because he was already about to go over the brink?

Gravatar This article now mentions that one of the victims was his step brother:

The two men found dead in the home on Sherman Court Wednesday were identified in the charges only as RB and BJ.

One of the two men has been tentatively identified as Brandon Johnson, who apparently is a stepbrother of Brent High, Canyon County Coroner Vicki DeGeus-Morris said.

Steve quoted Brent High from one of High's posts:

Now that im in the Same Metro area as my RL brother , and friends i'm looking to sell Brentos account and be done with EQ.

Perhaps the ending of a 12 year relationship combined with all the other major life changes and some sort of rejection or disapproval on his step brother's part was enough to tip him over the edge of his precarious mental state.
"RB" was probably one of those friends of his step brother's mentioned in High's post and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Maybe High discovered his step brother led a lifestyle involving things he disapproved of and, having just come from such a place in life where his gf participated in things he could not abide, High had had all of it he could take.

Gravatar Unfortunately, I thought it might be his brother. It will be interesting to see what his disability is...if, in fact, mental illness has something to do with this, regardless of what the police believe, at this point.

Gravatar If KatK is trying to head off the "potential ignorance" of readers of this blog about gamers, then why does he/she keep posting a bunch of info about the games? No one else seems to really be bringing that up.

Gravatar Can't wait for more details on this one, although I'm almost scared to know. I wonder if his newfound passion against evil played some sort of role in this.

Gravatar Hey Steve. I know i should writing this in a email . but as you know i hate to email out .
Just wondering how things are going, and a thought accoured that you were going to call but never did. just wondering if we were ever going to have that coinversation by phone. would be nice. After all we would have alot to talk about . Anyways just email me and maybe give a call if you still have my number, or i can reply back with it in email. Hope all is good, and i would still be interested in helping out, behind the scenes of course. I read this entire article, and i will agree that his disability has alot to do with the nature of mental illness. But i also think it was more of a mix between fantasy thoughts, and pure hate for someone or something that drove this hate crime to the level it did. I also agree that it had very little to do with anyone online playing games, but the ideas he gathered from playing online had alot to do with "how he felt and fantasized on how to kill them" . Possibly they had something to do with his relationship? maybe not. but i feel that they had some or alot of involvement with Brent. Anyways hope you email me and we can talk on the phone sometime.
Peace!
Velocity

Gravatar walking naked in the middle of winter. classic schizophrenic not taking his meds.

Gravatar good point, captain apathy.

Gravatar nobody, because I figure by filling in the details that you, who are not gamers don't know it will give you a more full understanding not only of the harmless gamers, (Who *way* outnumber the nutso ones.) but the unstable ones as well, that's why. Unstable is unstable, no matter what the hobby, but MMORPG players can be singled out for the same kind of misunderstandings as are piled on players of A.D.&D. (I've seen it happen.) And I'm a she, mouseover my homepage link...

Gravatar You're such a good investigator. I enjoy your online research.

Gravatar The constant posting about the online fantasy game *which no one seems to care about re this case, as several people have kindly noted* calls to mind the recent SOUTH PARK episode skewering WarCraft.

Allow me to head off any further commentary by stating I have lengthy professional ties to White Wolf's VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE RPGs and have waded through the controveries of *several* murder cases involving devotees of that game system.

Gravatar Nancy Collins: So you've seen the bitter taste such inquiries can leave on the "innocent bystanders" that happen to be devoted to a game that is tied to an incident, eh?

Gravatar I really think there needs to be a little respect shown to Steve and this blog and stop talking about gaming. It's incidental in this matter and he took the time to point that out even though it was obvious from the actual entry.

Gravatar Steve,
I apologize if I gave the impression that I thought you were attacking gamers. I'm not nearly shallow enough to believe that criticism of a single gamers actions is an indictment of all gamers. I've been a long time reader of your blogs, but I rarely feel qualified to to contribute to the discussions that follow your posts. In this case I felt my experience with both WOW, EQ1 and 2 would allow me to add some insight.

The long and short of it is that for Brent to stick with his EQ1 character, long after most gamers considered EQ1 to be finished, indicates a very strong level of attachment to that character. And I can certainly understand that the severing of ties with that character could be a very emotional event for him.

I thought KatK also added some excellent insight regarding the type of character that Brent played as well as that characters role in Raiding.

Basically, Brent spent 7 years of his life online being the linchpin for 72 other players enjoyment. The other members of the raid's chances at success or failure rested on his shoulders. He must have enjoyed playing that part because if he didn't he would have rerolled as a different character.

Gravatar I am Seriously SICK of hearing about gaming in thuis blog. it is a crime blog. the next one that mentions it. is free GAME now lets get back to the clues, and information gathering. ty.
I am not speaking for Steve but i am thinking Steve is feeling similar to me. I have stayed silent through all these blog entries because well i love to read what Steve has to say about crimes. he has great depth in information and helps solve crimes at times. So i like to stay in the background and read, but sometimes i feel it a must to write something. this is one of those times. CARRY ON

Gravatar Thank you Velocity.

And I got your earlier message. Talk atcha soon.

Everyone -- I am coming down with what must be the 5th bug of the Winter cold & flu season. Blogging may be light for a few days.

Thanks,

Steve

Gravatar KatK:
The one thing I got tired of quick were gamers who don't understand that Real Life trumps the Game, or those unwilling to admit that submerging oneself in a fantasy environ as much as possible is not healthy, whether that fantasy is Vampires, Wizards or Line-Dancing Armadillos.

Gravatar Nacy read my post above Steve's thanks

Gravatar Nancy*

Gravatar I agree: please, more talk on crime, not gaming.
Steve, hope you feel better soon!

Gravatar some further information that i did not see in your links Steve from ktrv.com...

"According to the court record, High had been living in the home on Sherman Court for about a month, but early Wednesday he allegedly woke up and bludgeoned two other men living there to death -- the murder weapon, most likely an axe that was found in a toilet, covered with blood and hair.

Nampa police officer Cameron Cowdrey told the judge, "During the time we spent with High, he made the statement to the effect of, he hopes what he did made the world better for women."

http://www.ktrv.com/Global/story...7& nav=menu439_2

he also tried to heal them after he killed them, allegedly.

Gravatar Mentally ill. I'm getting the feeling they won't try him that way, but he's sure sounding like he's crazy, especially the 'healing' them after killing them part.

Gravatar Sounds like he's from a church that has "laying on of hands". It also indicates "magical thinking" which would back up the idea that his gears aren't meshing well. Velocity, I will remember what you said here the next time there is a crime and people are seeking insight into the world of the person who committed the crime, and the world of the victims and I will stay silent. I've learned my lesson, and that is, people may *say* they want to understand how the individual's life was, but they don't mean it. Steve, I won't be posting here after this, look for me at Websleuths. Nutty as some of them may be, at least they don't make offers to attack me if I open my mouth again. Farewell

Gravatar A question for Lythia who posted yesterday. How do you know the initials (RB) of the other man that was killed? As far as I saw in the articles, they only gave his first name as Ray.

Gravatar I meant, Randy. They only gave his name as Randy.

Gravatar Anna - Read Lythia's post again, at the top - the quoted text from the article mentions the initials BJ (Brandon Johnson) and RB:

The two men found dead in the home on Sherman Court Wednesday were identified in the charges only as RB and BJ.

Gravatar http://profile.myspace.com/ index...riendID=6445264

This could be Brandon's Myspace....

Kat I was not attacking you by any means. You have fully misunderstood what i was saying. this was a general comment to all about the usage of gaming in the comments. I was not in any form insulting nor attacking you. Also if you notice the smiley at the end of the "free game" i was just kidding around that part and as i said it was a general thing, only because i was sick of hearing bout gaming on a crime blog. Dont get upset about a misunderstanding. As well i never said anything about being silent. all i said was that i do not post comments as much and do more reading then commenting. that had nothing to do with advice on others posting. I will hope you do not take anything i said in the wrong way . If you feel offended by anything i may have said , i apoligize. i hope you do understand that it was not meant in any way to attack you. I enjoy very much reading your comments on here as well as the many other blogs you have left comments on. please do not stop commenting here . it was not meant in any way to make you feel that way nor it was not even a personal thing , but general. Again please CARRY ON and i hope you will understand my comment. Thank you for reading this.

Gravatar oops Anonymous is me. forgot to fill out the Name. Need coffee!

Gravatar Sounds a whole like like a psychotic break imho, in which constant gameplay could affect hallucination, just as pt. has a hard time differentiating between dream and waking state, and TV images can stimulate hallucination.

Gravatar I applaud KatK for her defense of the gaming niche of society because I feel that way any time "bi-polar" or "mental illness" is given as the end-all be-all of this type of crime. Like gamers, many mentally ill individuals are highly productive members of society who don't deserve to be pegged as potential powder kegs of homicide just because of a few bad apples. Also, I would like to point out that bi-polar is the diagnosis of the day, so to speak, and many are incorrectly diagnosed (just like with anxiety and depression). This is especially true when a new drug (in this case Abilify) hits the market and starts putting self-diagnosis questionnaires online and in magazines. Long story short, let's look for other causes and clues and not just accept mental illness.

He could be disabled due to anything ranging former drug addiction to carpal tunnel to blackberry thumb.

Gravatar The biggest problem when you have someone who is genuinely delusional, especially those who are obsessive, is that fantasy worlds, such as those in RPGS, are the last thing in the world they need to be involved with. In ye olde days, back when entertainment options were far more limited, such people would get obsessed with the Bible. There's not a lot of difference between someone who is unbalanced and immersing himself 24/7 in RPG and kills thinking he's Conan or Kull and a religious zealot who kills because the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him and told him to destroy sinners in the name of the Lord. Or to quote a friend: "Back when I was growing up, folks like that used to get Jesus. Now they get Star Trek."

Gravatar You can actually become psychotic from staying awake too long, or a combination of factors even with no previous mental problems. Or you can be mentally ill and suffer periodic bouts of true psychosis, in which case you may not be aware of what your doing, asleep at the wheel, or even if you have some delusionary consciousness may not be capable of making decisions before your actions. This is a really bizarre thing that actually can happen to a person, although I have no idea how often it results in injury/crimes/violence. I don't like to make excuses for criminals, but I know this is a possibility here, and seems to have some of the tell-tale signs. Of course mental illness in general is misunderstood, overdiagnosed, abused by the legal system, and mismanaged by the medical system.

Gravatar I played with Brent on Everquest. He was a hell of a tank. He wasn't all there though. Mentally I mean. He did have some issues, none of which I am personally privy to of course. But they are there just the same. It was obvious from the way he typed.

Gravatar Hi mags

Gravatar Same creepy eyes as Kevin Underwood in this mugshot photo:
http://img250.imageshack.us/ img2...nderwoodgr2.jpg

Nicely done, Steve.

Gravatar Court documents also indicate at the time Brent High was arrested Wednesday morning, he was quoting bible scripture and not wearing any clothes.

During questioning, police said High believes what he did was right.

KTVB.com link

More evidence for the schizophrenic theory.

Gravatar I was thinking Underwood too.
Do we know for a fact that he was on disability? I need to know before I continue to judge this young man.

Gravatar The fact that he was telling cops he believes what he did is right, does that help establish defense? I mean they always talk about intent, if the defendant knew they were doing something wrong, planning, hiding evidence, etc. He left the ax in the toilet, talked about making the world better, tried to heal them(purportedly). I guess he did this right after waking up, but no indication how long this might have took yet.

Gravatar Walking around outside naked would tend to support the mental illness, however, Hacking tried the same thing, just not right after the crime.

Gravatar That both Azalea and Jules saw Kevin Underwood in this dude's face is so freaking weird to me, because I saw it too. In fact, I'm just sitting here freaking out that you all noticed that as well. I figured it was me. Damn.

Gravatar Huff said, "Mentally ill. I'm getting the feeling they won't try him that way, but he's sure sounding like he's crazy, especially the 'healing' them after killing them part."

it's getting harder to prove insanity based on the focus on hiding the criminal act in any way suggests knowing the difference between right and wrong

Gravatar I'm a retired EQ player and I still manage the website and forums for the guild Dark Bane. Brentos applied to join our guild back on 10/10/06 and became an initiate/member sometime in November. The last post I saw from him was on 12/30 talking about mp3s.

He mentioned Heffe in his SteelWarrior post, and Heffe is still listed on Dark Bane's roster. I'll have to see if I can find out any information from anyone in the guild.

I did find out that there was some debate about whether or not to bring him onboard because he had gone through a sort of 'three strikes and you're out' with a different guild before ours. That was on 10/6 (just a few days before applying to Dark Bane).

Here's a link to that post:

http://p080.ezboard.com/ fcamessa...picID=710.topic

If I find out anything through the guild or Heffe, I'll post here. This whole thing sort of makes me glad that I quit EQ two years ago!!

Gravatar http://p080.ezboard.com/ fcamessa...topicID=2.topic

According to a post there, BrentosDeathmaker went to Eagle Rock High School which I believe Brent High attended.

Gravatar wow, amazing where info can come up!

Gravatar First of all I wish the best for lilly (dont beleive the whole drug thing) I was in a guild with Brentos Lilly and his brother. No I do not and have never liked him. When he wanted to sell his warrior (thrid time) he had no place (in game progression wise) to go. He was only nice to people when he wanted something. Most people that hung around him knew he was well crazy. The way he would post 'rants' and then apologize from sounding like an asshole. I just hope the family can get through this

Gravatar I'M DISGUSTED AT HOW QUICKLY YOU ARE ALL SO WILLING TO JUDGE A MENTALLY ILL INDIVIDUAL!

Gravatar I was guilded with Brentos on Everquest. He was a very disturbing person indeed. He would do things that made everyone upset, but then we had to forgive him because of his obvious disorder.
The majority of people that were around this person "in game" knew of his illness. He would try to sell his character over and over again. Leave guilds and re-apply.
His actions honestly looked like he was "playing in real life", using an axe, trying to heal... seriously something triggered him. I feel due to his behavior in the game, and people got fed up with his actions, led him to be homeless so to say in the game he loved so much. I know he tried to leave the server, but when officers from his previous guilds were contacted, lets just say his EQ Resume sucked, so he was rejected.
I'm not by any means basing this blog on the game, but trying to give some insight why he may have grew bored and his mind wandered. He made it difficult for people to accept him in the game, and possibly in reality.
His means of escape, role playing, fantasy has dwindled away, and I can't compare him to a "sane" person, so he most likely took it differently.

http://p199.ezboard.com/ fthesary...icID=5491.topic

Gravatar You say not to mention games, but let me lay down some facts. I played with Brent (Brentos) in Everquest. We were guilded together in a guild called Heaven & Earth and he was a very unstable person - even in game. He was quick to get upset and make snap decisions that he would later apologize. We began to understand that this was part of the player, and we allowed him to come back time and time again.

Now... if he used an axe to kill them both, there wouldn't exactly be blood spatter the way it was described. The spatter pattern to me makes it seem like he was actually using 2 weapons - one being a blunt type object. In game, warriors carry 2 weapons... its easy to conceive this idea. After he killed them, he was quoted as to saying that he tried to heal them - and even tried to resurrect them, but it was not his power - both of which are traits of certain players in Everquest. After he had committed the murders, he stripped and took a shower and was still unable to come to terms with what he had actually done. He was found walking the streets naked, and when asked how he felt about what he had done he said, "I hope that I have made the world a better place for women."

There is without a doubt something psychologically wrong with Brent High. There are probably several things actually - Bipolar, Paranoia, Schizophrenia, Depression, other Personality Disorders, and most likely Delusional. The list could probably go on and on.

Gravatar I will be at everyone of his court dates and will make sure that he burns in hell!!! he maybe crazy, delusional, bipolar, or anything that is for the family to take blame on now! it's their fault for not commiting this loser Brent to a hospital. forget the money that is what it the state is for!. he hunted my nephew through the house and as my nephew was begging for his life he just kept hitting him and hitting him. I will make sure that he see my nephew and hear him begging for his life everyday that he is unfortunaltey alive. I hope his family members hear him too. It's not the gaming industry either, it's his crazy families fault for not committing him.. Like a dog with rabies he should of been put down, before he was able to tear families apart like he did. Brent I will see you in court and you will hear from me.

**** RIP RANDALL JAMES BROCK**** I WILL FOREVER LOVE YOU AND YOU WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY HEART******************88

Gravatar You know what, go ahead email me for what I'm about to say (brockcj@gmail.com)

I hope this sorry b*stard rots in hell for what he did. Have you read the police reports? PROBABLY NOT, but I am following this story with a passion, as it my was HUSBAND who lost his cousin because of this sick, sick person.

As for the blood being everywhere, he CHASED Randy through the house. CHASED! He killed the stepbrother, and when Randy walked in, and he saw, (according to the police report I have here) he started to yell, and try to get away, when this sick "individual" ran after him with an axe, hitting him in the back, face, ect.

And dont tell me he's mentally ill. He took off the clothes and TRIED to dispose of the murder weapon. Then he realized what he did. He left.

For those of you who say not to judge the mentally ill...obiviously someone knew how "wacked out" he was. Dont tell me that one of his "gamer" friends didn't have contact with him in real life...whether a phone number, or getting together in person. Its easy to just talk to someone else that way.

I hope they stick it to him. I saw how my husband reacted to his death, and I have meet Randy's parents, and I know that has to be the HARDEST thing any family can go through. I hope the familiy knows that all the family in the KC area are praying for you, and are here for you!

Gravatar What ever happened to this? Any updates on the case?

Gravatar OK I am sitting here reading a bunch of Bull s**t as for Randall's family I am sorry truly I am! One day when you to die and you meet back up with Randall you will know the truth about what happened on that horrible morning!
1st let me give you all a background of who I am or where I come from.... My name is Penny I have known Brent very closly for about twelve years. We met through my cousin who Brent was dating I think you guys call her Lillianna or something well I was never into the whole gaming thing infact I always thought of them to to be quite "weird" but really they where just different from me. I still loved both of them an YES I still do LOVE BOTH OF THEM!!! Brent will always be in my heart and whenever I see his picture I pray for him and I cry for him. If there is any decency left in people in this world today they might STOP, SHUT THEIR MOUTH and maybe try to put themselves in Brents shoes for a minute k if you can not let me asist you.. Picture if you will a horrible life times that by ten,,, thousand and see if you might very well kill someone, I assume that I could!! Spending as much time as I did with Brent yes I knew he was crazy but I knew itr was maintainable. If you would take the time to sit down and talk at eye level to Brent he was a very smart, loving & sparatic guy. This is the man after all that was going to let me , my boyfriend and all three of my children stay at his house in Idaho Falls just to help us in our financial situation that we were in. Instead the medicaid people kicked him off making it impossible for him to buy his medicine, and in his mind the truth of anything and the logic to the world started to turn like a blender inside his head. He would have mental breakdowns bbut hell so did I. When I seen his face pop up for a double homicide I ibstantly started tocry and I wanted to puke! I was angry at the system and jusr=t wished everyone could see it the way that I do... We can not ever take back that poor Randall happened to be at that house that morning. And I know for the familys sake not alot helps at this point but iu cant just sit back and read all these and not put in my two cents do you know what I mean?
I know Brent was a good person and he still is , under the right carea and his medicine he could live on to be a fully functionable person in life and maybe people can learb from hin, all he did was misunderstand a few lines in the bible! He has done it on more than onew occasion! All I ask Of $Randalls family is to try to find it in your heart that it was jusrt randalls time to go at least wait untill you judje Brebnt the way you do I understand your hurt I do but try to understand our hurt when we tried to get brent help and he was released and released one after another they.. Dont you think it broke our heart to see that a sickness in someone we love and care for ended up leading to this! Well it does and you know what you cant say that we can still go see hin cause his memory is probably on lock down.. And as for his sister if you need to get ahold of me for anything get ahold ogf my cousin. I wrote Brent a letter I want to go visit him so that he knows there is still people out here that care and will never stop! Much love to all who can respectively, respect others opinions ok....... And right on sis for having your bros back we all know what it stands for!!! Much Love sister

Gravatar I lost I.Q points reading that. I bet you wouldn't be saying all that crap if he killed one of your kids eh?

Gravatar I actually went to insurance training school in SLC Utah a couple years before this happened with Brent.

Later, after problems with my own girlfriend at my place of residence, I moved in with him and his gal at their place here in Idaho Falls. I stayed with them for about a month.

His "Everquest" life was before his and my brief stints as insurance salesmen. Shoot, selling insurance door to door and the way folks deal with you face to face when approaching them about such might have just as much to do with it as Everquest - who knows.

As for the "illegal drugs" comment. Not to rise to her defense or anything, but she smoked marijuana a little bit on occasion. There was no Meth or anything else. I never saw her even drink alcohol.

Brent got lost... Others like myself tried to help him find truth and righteousness, but he didn't listen too much.

As for religious views - Last I knew he was talking to mormon missionaries and going to the LDS 'church' about three blocks away from his house. I tried doing Bible studying with him on various issues and we even attended a local home church group which Brent stopped attending after he got into finnacial dires and went to ask the mormons if hey would help him pay for his house for a few months to get back on track. They asked him to start attending their church services and talking to the mormon missionaries.. That was the start fo the end for us as friends. I wanted no part in that as I grew up in mormonism and later saw the light and came out of it. Depsite showing Brent the truth of the matter, he saw it all as a finnacial way out and really didn't want to hear much else.

Prety quick after he started inviting the mormon missionaries in and over (mainly to get finnancial assistance from them as his gal was raised mormon but had no idea about what they taught or believed and really wanted no part at all in religious conversations) we kind of stopped hanging out even though I lived downstairs in his house.

He told me one day while home for a minute from trying to sell some inurance that I needed to move out. He was afraid of what he thought would happen with another guy in the house with his girlfriend. A completely crazy insinuation but still..

So, I packed all my stuff up right then and there and left and never looked back. Only recently did I accidently find out about his crimes.

Anyhow - Who's to blame for his murdering these two young men?

Solely himself I say. He could never let go of his past and just get on with his life. If his gal wouldn't have any kids with him and didn't want to talk religion at all and he no longer approved of her smoking marijuana - he should have just gave her an ultimateum and just let her go once and for all. He no doubt needed some serious psych. help, (though he said the Soc. Sec. was all just a put on).

He lost his sanity no doubt, but it happened quite awhile back.

Someone shoudl remind Brent what the Bible says on murder:

1. There must be two or more witnesses before one accused of murder can be put to death (Numbers 35:30)
2. A person judged guilty of murder must die. Do not allow any kind of bargain or ransom for his life. (Num. 35:30)
3. The blood of the victim murdered defiles the land. The only way it is cleansed is by administering capital punishment to the murderer. (Num. 35:33-34).

I tried helping Brent, and his girlfriend. But the damage was probably done a long time before I even moved in with them...He was probably headed down that path for awhile. When he turned his back on the truth, everything else came undone for him as well...

Gravatar Saryrn Tavern

Gravatar As for the person who wrote the above blog about it being his time and get over it!.. I hope you have to go through this one day and I will be standing over you and telling you to get over the fact.. your loving, caring friend killed my nephew as he begged for his life. WOW how can you look that crazy son of a bitch in his face??? I would spit on you and him and only can wish that one day you both feel the same pain that we have felt!! As for Brent if you ever read this I hope you rot in hell and one day i promise you.... you will pay for what you have done. that is a promise!!!! maybe not today or tomorrow but one day you and your pathetic family will pay!!! Pay for not getting you supposed medical attention you get. I hope everyone in your family is being haunted my randy's soul.!!! I only hope for one day you brent will take your own sorry ass life. I would love to see that is posted on the news that you hung yourself or axe'd yourself to death.. since you are so sick.. take your frustrations out on yourself or a family member. I know you couldn't fuck your family up more that it already is..

Gravatar I can't believe that there is actually someone on here who actually stands in defense of Brent High... a murderer. Not a (mentally ill) murderer but one who in his own right took very calculated steps to end the lives of two human beings. Support is designed to protect the weak within the walls of the system in which they live. (family, friends, etc) Randy and KyAl never deserved what happened, I'm a personal friend of KyAl and I was there to watch the family suffer because of this murderers decision to take life at will. I actually remember KyAl asking me for advice about Brent when he was a kid, we would take him fishing and let him feel wanted and appreciated. KyAl would make it a priority to help the kid. Only to end up dead. It makes me sad to hear how Randy's family is hurting, he never deserved what happened to him. I've only heard positive comments about Randy and may he rest in peace. My condolences to the family. The reality of this truly tragic story is that mental health will be blamed as a means to escape the severity of the punishment. If he is so sick then let the state place him in a facility for the rest of his days. Leave it at that but please don't defend his actions because as much as you want to believe it could have been different......its not. "Brent brutally killed two human beings with an ax" should be all you need to hear in order to make the conscience decision not to defend him. Can you really be so naive to believe that your defense of him is justified? Sadly the truth is that you probably have nothing better to do but to get some attention from such a high profile case, just so you can say "I knew him...he was like my best friend..." Randy's family is totally justified in their anger and for all who defend Brent......you should be ashamed of yourself to be taking sides on such a sensitive issue. Don't forget Brent is still alive. Randy and KyAl are not. Again, to the family of Randy.....my deepest sympathies. Justice will be served....I'll be at all of the court proceedings with KyAl's kids and wife.
