Henegin wrote (yesterday) Has anyone else found that there is a perceived rivalry between Pittsburgh and Philly around the rest of the country?
I spoke with a business contact near Seattle earlier this week and mentioned that I am from Pgh while me boss is from Philadelphia. He took that to mean it's a rivalry, while in fact we spent a few years rooting for a PA SuperBowl.
When we actually played (2004) my wife won a chocolate bar in my bet with my boss.

I'm kinda pulling for the Giants from the NFC if only because its Tiki's last year. If they win, though, then it'll become common knowledge that to win a superbowl you need a HOF RB in his last season and a #6 seed.
Honestly, all of the NFC contenders look like white hats to me (well, except the Seahawks - fuck them). Of course, I'd rather see Indy win it all, just so that those dumbass Brady fans sound more stupid when claiming Brady's better than Manning because Brady wins in the playoffs. Then it'd be "Yeah, well, Brady won three superbowls, and Peyton's only won one."

Just a comparison
H. Ward 2000 - 16.5 DPAR, 18.2% DVOA, 57.8 catch %, 83 passes
S. Holmes 2006 - 19.6 DPAR, 18.3% DVOA, 57 catch %, 86 passes

Oh, by the way, I somehow forgot to mention the Bears in the post so I'll do it here:
I like Lovie Smith, Urlacher, Tommie Harris, Peanut Tillman (primarily because of Ike), Lance Briggs and Robbie Gould (just kidding). But you know how, say, you meet a guy in college and he's a complete asshole, and every time you meet somebody else with that name (or are thinking about names for future kids ... or whatever), you want to punch somebody? Well, that's kinda how I feel about the Bears because of one idiotic Bears' fan. Despite all that -- and the fact that I love holding meaningless grudges -- I wouldn't be averse to seeing the Bears win because I think it would be funny if Rex Grossman got hot and played out of his mind for the next month. Sean Salisbury's head might explode.

Oh, if it means Salisbury's death, then I'm Bears all the way. Hopefully he's hugging Jay Mariotti at the time of explosion, and we can get two birds with one stone.

How could I forget to include the Seahawks on my list?
Revised:
I much prefer to direct my hatred at Baltimore, New England, Cincinnati, Seattle, Cleveland, Jacksonville, and Tennessee -- in that order. Of course, Cleveland always the potential to move way up the list if they could ever put a team together.

Anyone but the Ravens.
And anything but Manning Vs. Manning.
And anything but New York Vs. New York.
And i'm not rooting for the Saints because people will once again start talking about how the NFL is rigged. And I hate that. Unless they tell me how it's rigged so I know how to bet.
Personally, I'm rooting for the Chiefs because they play to win the damn game. Plus, I think it would be awesome to see the Colts run defense give up 2,000 yards rushing to Larry Johnson in one game and have everyone blame Peyton Manning for it.
And whatever city hires Ken Whisenhunt - the following days headline must be "_______________ Take a Whiz."

wow, there was some really funny stuff posted today.
RE: OLBs
while i think my preference for a LT has been beaten to death, it's interesting to note where stud 3-4 OLBs have gone in recent drafts. in 2005, demarcus ware went 11th overall and merriman went 12th. in 2006 kamerion wimbley went 13th overall...
speaking of which, if the browns make the (stupid) decision to fire crennel and then hire somebody who will use a differnt defensive front, the very next minute colbert should be on the phone offering our 2nd rounder for wimbley.

I could personally enjoy Chargers vs. anyone. I agree that the Merriman thing is a mark against them, and that Rivers is getting annoying, but it's hard not to like LaDainian Tomlinson. He breaks records without inflating his ego.
Essentially, I want anyone except the Ravens, the Patriots or the Cowboys to play in the Super Bowl. Which means we're gonna get a New England/Dallas Super Bowl, pitting everything that's wrong about Boston (the self-centeredness, the demands for the rest of the nation's respect or pity, the insistence that everything that happens to their teams is the best or worst to happen in all of history) against the worst of Texas (the smug "America's Team" nonsense, the self-love, the insistence that the Cowboys were the real Team of the 70s because they were in more Super Bowls). It'll be like Tampa Bay/Oakland all over again. I'll watch for the commercials.

Wow. A bunch of interesting stuff on PFT this morning. Namely, the Cowher/Belichick speculation. Honestly, I'd love Cowher to coach the Dolphins if it meant the Steelers would get two first- and two second-rounders out of it. That's a no-brainer.

In 2000, 2002 and 2004, the eventual Super Bowl winner lost to the Steelers during the regular season. To keep that up (in even numbered years) it would have to be New Orleans or Kansas City.
Since 1994, the only other Super Bowl winner the Steelers faced was Denver in 1997 and the Steelers beat them too. So to keep the "no SB winner beats the Steelers on the way" going, we need to eliminate Baltimore and San Diego as well.

No, that's not quite right. In 2000, Baltimore also beat the Steelers, but you know what I mean...

An interesting article in the post-gazette today speculated on the Cowher-Dolphins thing that Ryan commented on yesterday and I dismissed as not going to happen.
Looks like it could. If Cowher were to leave and we could get a 1st or 2nd round pick for him, I'd be OK with that!
Then we can fix our OL and draft for LB depth at the same time...
Oh and Ryan, sorry to disparage your idea yesterday.

Ryan - I have no idea how to do permalinks, but since Florio and PFT is now on your good side, is there a chance you could send them an email describing how to link each post? It drives me nuts that I can't link to any of their posts, just that scrolling page of the rumor mill.

Henigin,
PFT doesn't have permalinks, just the ol' rumormill page. Not sure why, but I know other people have voiced similar suggestions.

Yeah, that's my complaint. In fact, I sent an email a few months ago to them asking if they had considered permalinks. The reply I got was "what are permalinks?"
Even though I have no idea how to do it, I was hoping that it is a simple thing and you (or someone else who is html-savvy) might be able to give them an easy explanation of how to do permalinks.

Cowher's record is currently 153-91-1. That's a 62.4% win percentage over 15 years. Just say he happens to take a job with either the Browns or Dolphins, and just imagine with me here say coaching 6 years at a record of maybe 40-56 with only 1 playoff appearance. That would put him at 193-147-1, or a win % of 56.5. A.) How long would he survive on reputation without getting fired. and B.) Does this still leave him as a potential hall of fame pick?

If Cowher coaches for another team next year, you can kiss good-bye all the B.S. about him wanting to spend more time with his family by being closer to them.
He will, in fact, have to spend a lot more time on his new job rebuilding a broken team than he would have spent if he stayed here, maintaining and improving the Steelers.
What would it mean? No matter what anyone says, these spats between owners and employees are always about the money.

BTW, I've been trying to make myself feel better about our two humiliations by the Ravens (not sure that it's possible) and I began wondering... Were we really that bad, or what? I mean, if we were that hot at the end of the season, beating everyone else like red headed step children, how do you explain getting crushed not once, but twice? Is there an explanation?

hmmm..
Saints need to win SB..I love the city and people..they deserve some good news.
Colts- it will be a cold day in heck before I support Peyton Manning..He irrritates me in so many ways..suffice to say that he reminds me of a guy in HS..who stole my marbles..actual marbles..not my limited brain power..
I may be the only guy who hates Marvin's "lonely guy at the end of the bench" routine..actually the guy creeps me out..can't pin it down..
Bengals..hey! that's right! we kicked their ass out already.."that's another team we are better than and should have beaten" Carson Palmer..yeesh..that is gettin old time for some new whines from him.
Chargers..the interest is really in seeing how Marty blows this one..and you KNOW he will..Actually , i think Phillip Rivers will do a "Big Ben in New England in the playoffs" meltdown. He stumbled in to the playoffs as it was.
Da Bears...they may win..I give my official seal..the ring of power..
Seattle.. surely some clock mngmt. problem will doom them..
Dallas... getting worse by the week..thought they had something but apparently not..so sad!
Baltimore... I like their D... can't help that after they stomped the livng crap out of us 2 games in a row..But they may NOT win..too soon after their last one and Billick will be even more obnoxious and imperious after that..
KC..yes..them and New Orleans..and I want LJ to get 300 yards against Indy..with many shots of Peyton with "the face"

It's exactly because Carson Palmer keeps using the same quote after every loss that makes it so hilarious. It just gets more funny every time I hear it. It's like the Bengals get better and better after every loss. That's just another team that we're better than...

Ahh more to add...
On Stan Savran's show this evening on Fox Sports Pittsburgh Gerry Dulac stated that the Steelers have informed both Grimm and Whiz that their desire is to hire from within. Dulac says its Whiz followed by Grimm. Ed Bouchette says its the other way around - Grimm, Whiz.
Talk amongst yourselves.....

I'm not in favor of Whisenhunt. I'm not necessarily in favor of Grimm, but I really don't like Whisenhunt. I think his qualifications are severely overblown.
Oh, and I'm not sure that I would wish a Super Bowl win on Larry Johnson. Wouldn't that put him up over 500 carries most likely? Yeesh...
